There's really no such thing as a skin in Snitz. Most people just play around with the colours to make it show what they want. A proper skin mechanism allows each user to have their own personal/list-chosen colours, and Snitz just doesn't do that atm.

Skinning should be on top of the Snitz future development list IMO. phpBB really has that concept down nicely.

Gotta agree. Seems like every app I see these days has the capability. Except my Snitz forum.

that's not really a skin, just a css selector which changes the colors. skins dramatically change the look and feel of the site. spend some time looking at some phpBB sites and you'll notice the major difference.

here are some basic examples from phpBB to demonstrate what I am referring to:

BTW, this is by no means me showing a support for a php based discussion forum. I was merely pointing out that this would be a very popular feature for Snitz. phpBB uses tempate rewrites which actually makes the skinning system pretty easy to use.

Something odd about those skins though. They only seem to change the outer page. Go into one of the forums and it reverts back to default.?

I know that the look of a forum is said to mean a lot but often I get the feeling that itīs only for compensating lack of content or just fun for the developer. Anyhow itīs up to every traveler to choose her/his way. Personally I really like the original look of Snitz, I just would like to have a setting for max length of lines in posts.

but the structure of the coding can provide a method for developers to create their own templates without having to modify the core of the code.

I know that ServerHacker's new v9 (not sure if its still beta, haven't been there in a while) has some skinning... I've got a copy of it sort of running at www.hopefellowship-nc.org

Since its not completely finished, you can use ProgramCheck/programcheck to log in. Just remember, I'm not done with it yet!

Oh, almost forgot: if you've got a base-snitz install (no mods) there is an "upgrade" script available to upgrade to it. Even with the Beta I've been playing with, I haven't found any real issues (just a minor glitch with a table that shows up on the 2nd blue moon in the...).

CSS usually, and possibly a HTML templating system as well. I don't know if phpBB works that way, but system like Joomla do.

I've installed PhpBB before (never used it much though). I know that is uses a directory structure for themes where each template has its own folder. Each theme folder has an image directory (as far as I can remember) and copies of template files for most (if not all) pages for the forum.

It should be easy enough to create a simple skin system for Snitz similar to the above e.g. You would have a main folder for Skins. Within it create a "default" folder which has an "images" folder for the default Snitz icons, graphics and title logo. You only run into difficulty when you have to do things like set the colours in the database and/or change the layout of a page (without using the File System Object for compatability with *nix or shared servers).

The whole skins logic is that these settings are stored in the CSS file in the skins folder, not in the database at all.
