I tried to change the email address of the moderator, which was yourname@server.com
When I did, I get this msg:

There Was A Problem With The Details

Your request was not sent due to the following error: [11004] Valid name, no data record of requested type

What's that mean ??

Can you use other forum email functions? Do they work?

That error is usually caused by a problem with dns. I suspect that the hostname for the mailserver in your email config is not setup correctly.
Generally its because the mailserver hotname does not have an i.p. address associated with it.

Do you have an i.p. address for your mail server?

As far as I can see its not an issue with the mail server but with DNS. Have you entered an i.p. address for the mail server in the Email Config Area of your forum? Any other info which might help us narrow it down would also be helpful e.g.

Which mailserver are you using?
Does it allow relays or does it require authentication?
Are you the server admin?

The mailserver given to me by the host's tech support.
Not sure if it allows relays, or requires authentication.

The fun continues.. I can't have the server send out emails until the from:email is legit, and I can't change the email address for the moderator to something legit.

In the admin area of your forums change the administrator email address to a legitimate email address on the mail server. This email address is the "from" address for most email sent from the forum. It might solve your problem.

I am also having a problem with mail. And it looks like you may have hit on the cause of our failures.

Your comment above ("In the admin area of your forums change the administrator email address to a legitimate email address on the mail server.") leads me to ask -

Does the admin email address need to reside on the outgoing mail server? On our system, the admin email address resides on a mail server DIFFERENT from the mail server listed in admin options.

Do you see this as a problem?

TIA

That usually depends on the server, though it's rather often necessary that the sender has a valid email address on the server used to send the emails.

True - and Thanks.

I found the problem. For unknown reasons, the CDOSYS E-Mail component was selected instead of CDONTS. When changed to CDONTS, it took off.

I have two email problems with a new install.

First the admin email is yourmail@server.com even though the admin address is set to a legitimate email address. How do I change that?

Second, when a new member registers the confirmation link goes to a page not found error. How can I fix that?

Thanks,

David

Sounds like the Admin options may not be set up right.

The first one is found: Admin Options --> E-mail Server Configuration

The second one is: Admin Options --> Main Forum Configuration (You may not have the forum URL set right)

I'm also getting no email, but no error messages too.

My hosting provider does not allow IP addressing for the smtp server, is that a problem?

When I register as a new user the email confirmation is not recieved at a valid email address that is in daily use.

The new user confirmation is still resolving to page not found. see below.
Technical Information (for support personnel)
Error Code 11001: Host not found
Background: This error indicates that the gateway could not find the IP address of the website you are trying to access. This is usually due to a DNS-related error.
Date: 2/23/2006 7:49:37 PM
Server: cc385120-a.GoAskDavid.local
Source: DNS error
