http://www.google.com/analytics/
quote: Google Analytics tells you everything you want to know about how your visitors found you and how they interact with your site. You'll be able to focus your marketing resources on campaigns and initiatives that deliver ROI, and improve your site to convert more visitors.
I know there are a lot of you who live and breath on your site statistics, where they are coming from, what they click on, how long they stay, browser statistics, etc.
Google Analytics is free and all that is needed to install is to insert a small javascript in your header of your site. Check out the website for the info it collects on your visitors and your site. It is impressive.
And I haven't even tried it yet. Anyone tried it? |

I'm using it now for about a week, and it's working. But that's about it ; it's not fast, and it doesn't seem too accurate, compared to the raw logfiles. I've got a topic about on oxle, where sr_erick also tested it out; he too found some strange discrepancies between google analytics and 'the real world'.

Can't create an account at the moment :
quote: Google Analytics has experienced extremely strong demand, and as a result, we have temporarily limited the number of new signups as we increase capacity. In the meantime, please submit your name and email address and we will notify you as soon as we are ready to add new accounts. Thank you for your patience.
But won't the logfiles always be more precise ? Or does Google REALLY see all |

There are numerous reasons why there would be discrepancies. If the clients browser doesn't support javascript then Google Analytics won't capture anything is just one reason.
The thing I like about it is this. It provides a means of tracking ROI which other stats packages don't unless you're willing to spend a good bit of cash. For example, if you pay for traffic on Adwords, you can track the user from the instant they clicked the ad to the point where they order something or leave your website. You could also track forum registrations, etc. I'm sure that you could also track other things but I haven't fully explored it yet. |

The most interesting thing to me is screen resolution and IP mapping. Two things I don't care to do with my own tracking. It's also nice as a backup since all of my sites generate about 15GB of log files per month. Gets to be a pain archiving and processing those every month. |

@podge ; very true about the non-javascript enabled browsers. I didn't think of that one, even though it's so obvious. |
