My 2p is that once you're shafted by malware, you're shafted forever. Or rather, that the mean-time-between-updates is sometimes faster than the antispyware/antivirus patterns can keep up with. I use the analogy of a cheating partner - once the trust is gone, you can never really be 100% sure again...
What would (ok did) I do? Flatten and rebuild. In fact you'll be so amazed at how much better your computer runs for formatting and reinstalling everything, you'll almost want to thank the malware for forcing you to do it 
Edit - what Podge says is true, just make sure you've used at least 1 antispyware product (to catch the low-hanging fruit) before HijackThis!, or you'll get flamed when you post your results to a HJT forum. The software isn't overly intuitive, but it examines all the entry points for spyware and reports on those, as opposed to using pattern-file matching, so it's very very good. |
