Also, always keep a really good eye on the Microsoft website - you may find (often time-limited) upgrades a cheaper way to get up-to-date, even if it means you have to buy a second-hand old-product license first (eg as above!)

http://www.microsoft.com/uk/windowsserversystem/launchtour/default.mspx has a webcast from Birmingham UK for the product launch if anyone wants to see the goodies - yes, it's marketing rich, but the webcast (1hr50min) also contains some juice, so some of you may enjoy it :)

Ok. This is interesting - http://www.technetevents.com/launch/#Upgrading
I don't know how much it costs to register for the event as I'm outside the USA.

quote:
Attend the Special Edition Launch 2005 event, and you'll receive a free copy of Visual Studio® 2005 Standard Edition and SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition.*

*Offer only good to registered launch event attendees. Must attend the event to receive software packages or vouchers for software redemption. Limit: one offer per person, while supplies last. The software may not be resold and is not redeemable for cash. Taxes, if any, are the sole responsibility of the recipient.

Podge, http://www.microsoft.com/ireland/servers/launchtour/default.mspx has some availability. I think it's a free show to launch the new toys :)

The one for tomorrow has some spaces and the location is quite near to me but I cannot make it. Have to work

Am I correct in assuming that there is no upgrade pricing from MSSQL2000 to 2005. You have to buy MSSQL 2005 outright?

Yes, you are correct, MS do not generally offer upgrade prices

SQL Server 2005 will be available for sale through all channels on December 1, 2005. Until that time, customers can benefit by purchasing SQL Server 2000 and Software Assurance (SA). By doing so, customers are entitled to a free upgrade to SQL Server 2005 as well as other benefits available through the recently revamped SA program.

If you bought SA through Volume Licensing, you'll get a freebie upgrade :) Don't know if that helps in your own case. If you work for a large-ish/partner company, talk to your MS TAM about it, see what they say :)

Mind you, work may give you the half-day off to go to the show if they get to play with SQL2K5 when you get back ;-)

They use a competitor's product here at work so there's no chance there. I can't take a personal day either because I'm already committed to a meeting tomorrow. I was only going to go for the free software anyway .

This would actually cost you more than just buying SQL 2005, that is if you can actually get SA when buying a single copy of a product, from what I can find you must have an Open licence or volume license schemes to qualify for SA

Yep, exactly right, volume licensing isn't for the small 2-man-shop, but it's possible Podge, or someone else reading the thread are working for a SME where volume licensing becomes viable

Isn't it funny how committed and meeting usuall fall in the same sentance...

I just wish I'd known about the US dates sooner as I had just missed the one for my area.

I saw this in todays Computer World. Its a Q & A with Steve Balmer about the new release of SQL Server 2005.

Its more or less Steve trying to do some Microsoft Marketing, but it was an interesting read despite that.
