What's the typical markup price on things such as hooded sweatshirts and other clothing? I can get hooded sweatshirts made for $28 each after all expenses and I'm wondering what I should sell them for. Obviously, I want to sell them for as high a price as possible but I was wondering if there was some sort of "rule of thumb" markup price out there that people usually follow. I was thinking of selling them for between $35 to $40 each, with a markup price of 40% being right around $40. Any suggestions?
Of course, shipping would cost them extra. |

I'd say to keep the price at a reasonable level, compared to the competition. If you're not depending on the income from the sweatshirts there's no need to sell them for too much. If it covers your expenses and time spent (time required for processing each order at an hourly tarrif) just add something on top.
Keep an eye on the competition and don't price yourself out of the market. |

I tried one on at Costco yesterday. Hooded, zipper front, fleece: $26.97 - But I didn't buy it because the sleeves didn't fit snug at the wrist. Also, I thought that they fit a little on the large size.
Your margin (about 29%) seems okay, but the market is very competitive. How you differentiate your product and sell to your target market will be very important.
I don't know the garment industry, but your cost seems a little high for the mass market. Unless you have a specialty market with product specific to it, I'd examine the price a little closer.

Well, these aren't plain jane sweatshirts, they are of course branded with my website logo so you can't really get them anywhere else. So far the response from members it seems that anywheres from $30 to $50 is acceptable, but of course they'd want to pay less. They know it is to support the site.
I've been looking at clothing from http://shop.foxracing.com as I am a huge fan of their things. They are pricing fancy hooded sweatshirts as high as $75 but I think that is an outrageous price. |

I've always done a "$5 of each item goes to support the site" thing. It lets the buyer know exactly how much he's contributing. |

-gary's suggestion is spot-on, as you're keeping that community feel, and don't appear greedy if you state all prices/margins upfront! What I would say is that you should represent good value for money - a cheap fleece may fit and feel like a cheap fleece, so maybe offer a couple of prices/qualities? |
