Tonight I registered the domain forumcode.com. I'm not really sure what I should do with it, but I thought this domainname was too good to 'not register' it.
I'm thinking of making it a site which covers all sorts of forumsoftware from Snitz to phpBB and Community Server, with comparisons, reviews and perhaps a forum (duh...) for support and questions. Stuff like that.
Or on the other hand a one page FAQ on how to use forumcode. hehe
I know it's hard to start a complete new forum on that subject nowadays, so I'm all ears to any other suggestions |

A Snitz 2000 forum, right? |

Maybe focus more on how to "run" or "nurture" a forum since there are so many other sites that simply compare (not that you couldn't have that too...).
Just my 2c. |

One thing that pops into my mind would be to start a board talking about various forum software and exploring the area of forum standardization and interoperability. Believe it or not, this is comeing.
Think about it, you and a partner company each have communities for your products. You use a customized version of Community Server, and they use out of the box vBulletin. You want your board to be able to search their board and vise versa. What kind of standard interfaces (webservices) would be needed for forum software to interoperate? |

Mmmm...good idea's! Especially the standardization could be a very interesting topic. But also things like integrating external identiy management (for example Microsoft Passport) into forums, and bandwidth optimization tools/packages focussed on forums.
And of course, standardization in the forumcode (ubbcode). Now just find a platform to run it on. Ehm...Snitz! |

Just throwing out ideas. Besides, forums are more than just code and databases. I've been trying to explain to Will that activity for the sake of activity will not nessecarily draw people to the Warsong Records Forum. I have been able to get him to start writing some articles - ie posting with purpose. Purpose is why this forum does so well... we are all here for a reason. But, not everybody understands this. They hold on to the "If you build it, they will come" mentality, as if there weren't any other places for them to go. But I digress...
I do like the idea of standards and services. I had found an article a while back on consuming .NET services with classic ASP and vice-versa. |

Almost forgot - I had thought of "ForumCode" as a play on words to that end.... |

Thanks for all the input! I'll be mesmerizing this 'project' for a while and then decide which direction to go. I'll certainly need to find out how to host it. (hosting it as a subdir of oxle isn't very professional ) |

That was exactly what I thought, and the reason I registered it! |

Maybe an articles section as well with a different categries for end users, web developers, people contemplating creating their own software, etc. discussing a wide range of forums related topics?

There has been some progress with forumcode.com already. Some people here from Snitz (sr_erick, muzishun, golfmann) have 'joined the team', sr_erick has offered to host it, and we're currently in the process of setting up the inital site. The initial site will most likely be based on the oxle-code, or IPB (but as IPB will cost us money, I guess it'll be based on the oxle code.)
We're going to try to cover both the software aspects as well as the 'soft' aspects such as design, moderation, features etc, in order to try to answer the question 'What builds a great community'. Now we just need to hope that we really do know what we're talking about ! |

Just signed up, Marcel and spotted a couple of hiccups.
1) When editing your profile, your signature isn't being run through the CleanCode function to convert the HTML in it back to forum code.
2) Also, after turning on the birthdays sidebar thingy, I now receive this error:Microsoft OLE DB Provider for SQL Server error '80040e14'
'mid' is not a recognized function name.
/inc_birthdays.asp, line 36 |

Mmmm... I cannot say I see the same behaviour. I just tried to edit your profile, and did the same with mine, and it converts everything just fine. I'll look into it asap.

Will check that one too....strange that this one doesn't work now, as it does work on oxle (same code) |
