HuwR, do you know if it's Open Source? If so, I don't see why many hosts wouldn't be willing to add support for it. I'll start playing around with MySQL at my current host, then hopefully move up to SQL Server or possibly FirebirdSQL if it looks like it'll work for what I need.

just for completeness, Ingres is also available http://opensource.ca.com/projects/ingres for the right price - and that's an awesome db engine, used in military-grade ops too.
