OK, here's the deal, I reformatted my HDD the other day because I was having FTP and internet connection sharing issues plus a whole lot of other issues including frequent crashes. Anyway, the PC is running nice and fast again and up until yesterday afternoon my FTP was working fine. Now, I start my client (Core FTP Lite) and it connects to my hosts Windows server, authenticates ok, then pauses and comes up with an error: Cannot retrieve directory listing (server not responding). Would you like to try the directory listing in the opposite mode (active/pasv)? I click yes and it pauses for a long while and then times out : Can't open data connection. Error loading directory...
I'm using Zone Alarm Security Suite, but even with it disabled I get the same error. This is the same crap I was getting before my reformat. Nothing I googled could explain it.
Funnily enough I can connect to the Linux server on my host ok. My host is extremely helpful but the issue is on my pc as I can connect fine from my Server PC, but its a MPITA to do so.
I've sone all the usual things, reboots, cold boots, turned off all running programs. Reinstalled CoreFTP.
I mean it was working fine for the last few days. I had even been using it yesterday, 2 hours later it didn't work anymore. I had installed nothing since. There was no Windows updates or ZA updates. It has me completely baffled.
This is my complete FTP log:

if you're still suffering Monday, drop me your login details and I can try from here if you like, just in case it is the server :)
Also try a different FTP client, I like smartftp (and the price is right ) |

In passive mode, which was set by default, in WS_FTP LE (that's my FTP client), had lots of problems. When I unchecked the passive mode option, everything went smoothly, had no errors, could browse around withour the issues experienced in passive mode. |

OK, with ZoneAlarm shutdown I can connect in Active Mode with SmartFTP. I've got all the settings switched on in Program Control for CoreFTP and SmartFTP but no joy when the firewall is up. Anyway, I'm out of trouble for now. Thanks for your help guys. |

Did some research on Zone Alarms support forums and it is actually an issue with the latest version of ZA. Anyway, I fixed it by putting the IP Address of my hosts server in the Trusted Zone and changing my FTP connection to Active. ...if its not one thing its another.. |
