Yeah i know but it's hard to advertise your website. i sent a url to google but it could take up to a month. all the other options cost money and i'm a poor college student. why don't you register at my site? Did that sound too needy? Well if you want |

Why would you join one of mine, you don't even know what the topic is. What would you have to contribute? |

Thats not my point. My point is that a community has to have something in common to go anywhere, and to advertise you are going to have to target people who are interested and have somthing to contribute to your topic. |

Yeah i guess my topics were sort of general. I'll probably narrow it down to gaming because thats what i like the most. but there was this other forum that did have a narrow topic but most of the posts were in the unrelated and warroom category. That meant even though the site was about a specific topic they had more fun talking about life and flaming each other. My forums pretty empty so far |

Yes, its true that alot of people will like to chat about general things ans flame eachother, but thats not what brings people together. Common interests bring people together. |

Mysteryguy,
You have to do a message board of a topic that interests you. Do it for yourself. If you like it, then others might too. Limit your topic to a niche topic instead of something very general. Gaming may interest you, but there are tons of gaming message boards and is still very general within that genre. Why don't you limit it even further? The more selective you are of your topic, the likelihood that others will visit. But, even in gaming, limiting it is still difficult because there are already many RPG forums, adventure forums, and even specific message boards for specific games. You must offer something new, something novel. And you must have something they want so that it offers them value to post.
Building a community will not take place overnight.
Invite friends or put your website in your signature of other message boards that you like to visit. But, do not overtly advertise your site or people will consider you a spammer. You must contribute to the conversations and become known there and people will end up clicking your link. If they like what they see, they'll post.
Getting into the search engines does take time. It won't happen overnight. In the meantime, build your site and your linkage. Add content. Start topics that you want to see that you don't find elsewhere. |

Usually you start with a topic and build a community, not the other way around. |
