How come no one posted anything about this yet?
They say talk is cheap. Google thinks it should be free. Google Talk enables you to call or send instant messages to your friends for free–anytime, anywhere in the world. Google Talk offers you:
- Choice: Get in touch over email, IM or a call
- Quality: Talk through your computer but hear your friends as if they were in the same room
- Convenience: Your Gmail contacts are pre-loaded into Google Talk so inviting or talking to your friends is just a click away
Google Talk is in beta and requires a Gmail username and password.
Now don't expect an instant messenger with a flashy interface that rivals MSN Messenger, Yahoo Messenger or ICQ. Google started out pretty simple. Just a plain interface with 2 main features: text chat and voice. And that's it. No emoticons/smilies, etc.
It won't replace any of your messenger's right now. But I think it's a pretty good start. Can't wait to see what other features they will implement.

p.s. if anyone wants a gmail email address, email me your email address so I can send you can invite. |

There are standards, just standards are no good if everyone goes off developing their own proprietary stuff or extending the agreed standards making them less compatible. |

You couldn't possibly be referring to Microsoft could you?
(Or AOL now that I think about it...) |

It's an implementation of Jabber which is an open standard - you can choose one of many many jabber clients (or write your own). The server implemetation can contain the gateways to MSN, Yahoo, etc, so you get all your buddies in one place |

Too bad GoogleTalk is only supporting a socks firewall on port 1080....not available here at work ; we've got ISA on 8080, so no GoogleTalk for me. |

I've never had much luck with IM voice or video conferencing.
I used broadvoice. I get a phone number I can take with me anywhere in the world that has a broadband connection. Very convenient.
I've got a California area code, and I'm living in the UK! |
