I have outgrown my shared server and will be moving to a dedicated server over the next few days.
It appears that I only have to change the db path in config.asp since file structure will not change. Is this correct? (I know about the whereami file if I have a problem.)
I do know I will have to reset folder permissions.
Am I overlooking anything? |

If you are using the mail features, you may have to change the address of your mail server. Also, depending on the server you're moving from and the server you'd moving to, you may spot a few niggly little errors. When we made our move recently, I had a few numerical variables throwing up errors when I tried to compare them against another numerical variable as I hadn't passed them through any int or lng function before making the comparision.

Thanks Shaggy.
Yea, I was just reading about the mail situation on another forum.
I'm certainly going to leave the old one there until the bugs are worked out. I'll have my moderators play with the new one by IP until its right before I change the DNS. I'll just snag the DB right before I shut down the old one.
The *niggly* errors you mention are a little over my head, but I'll see what happens. I'm sure with the help here , if they pop-up, I can get them straighted out fairly easily before we go live.
Thanks again! |

You shouldn't have too many problems, I'm a little surprised though you say your forum's outgrown shared hosting, are you running an Access DB ? you may have outgrown Access and could benefit from changing to MySQL, but unless your host super loads their servers, you have in my mind, a fairly moderately sized forum there that should perform perfectly fine without the need for the cost of dedicated servers. |

My Access DB is only 17mb. My host said it's the asp app pool on the shared server. All the sites are using it, since thats pretty much the main reason to use a Windows server.
My asp pages are taking 20-40 seconds to load during the day and peak evening hours. After midnight or so ET they load almost instantly. Most times less than 1.5 seconds. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I would think that would rule out the DB as the problem.
Switching to SQL is definitely in my plans but I have no clue how to do it yet. I think my best bet would be to pay someone here to do it.
As far as cost, its actually not as bad as you might think. I have 4 shared hosting accounts that I can consolidate so its not a huge jump once I switch them all over and get rid of all the shared accounts. |

Let me ask this.
How often should an archive be done? We're at almost 13,000 posts and I haven't done an archive yet. Could that be my problem? |

You can archive some posts, it should speed up things a bit. However, the random nature of the problem suggests it's more server related than anything. 5 users is not much, either.
With those stats you certainly do not need a dedicated server. I would bet that the problem will persist after the move. If I were you, I'd either move to another DB platform (which would offer more stability than Access in a Windows 2003 environment) or would move host. |

Thanks ruirib. I'm going to look into another host and switching over the DB.
I did a search on these boards for a host and unfortunately most of the ones I found are no longer in business. I'm using Godaddy right now and most of the web hosting forums around the net don't have much good to say about them.
The more I think about it, you're probably right about it not changing with a dedicated. I've been having these problems for a while and every time they tell me an upgrade will fix it. Now I am maxed out on the shared server and the problem is worse than ever. But they tell me now a dedicated server will fix it. They will do nothing further to help me.
Do you have any recommendations on a hosting company? I was looking at 1&1 this morning.
Thanks again. |
