I set up some subforums for friends and like to have their own banner showed on top when they are viewing their subforum. Because I'd like to set up some links directly to there subforum on other sites so they can use the subforum as their official forum.
The My Theme mod should be able to do that. You can specify a logo and colourscheme per forum with that mod. I'm not sure if that mod is still online. If not, just let me know. I should have it laying around somewhere.
About avatars ; avatars are used as a graphical representation of the member ; a small picture below the username. Just see some topics here for an example: http://www.oxle.com So, they're not serving any other purpose than to enable the users to obtain their own online identity.
