Seems like the facts contradict the hype. Or is it that bugs begin to show when the user numbers climb and attention is drawn to the app in question?

I don't know if Firefox's security came from less bugs. I think it came from the idea that malware targeted IE vulnerabilities.

Even so, as the numbers climb more malware will target Firefox bugs.

(Time to move to Opera)

Looks like that, in terms of numbers, Firefox has been getting a few vulnerabilities as well. So it may as well happen as you wrote, that malware will start to target Firefox. I guess malware is to computer apps what papparazi are to celebrities: once popularity increases, attacks tend to occur!
