 Downloading a movie instead of saving the URL?

In school my teacher wants me to save a movie to her computer but she doesnt want to save just the URL. Does anyone know of a software program where you can download movies from the websites without just saving the file extension (URL) to your computer?

it just depends how the movie is being linked, ie whether it is a link to a file or whether it is being streamed, if it is being streamed then you can't save it, that is kind of the point of streaming, if it is a link to an actual file then you can just do a right click and save target as.

There are programmes that will record streaming files or simply rip them down from a server but, and maybe I'm mistaken here, I heard such software is illegal. There is one little trick that doesn't require any software, but until someone confirms that such action is legal, I'm loath to post it here.

Well, it's not by default illegal to capture a stream. In some cases it is, but afaik that's only the case if it's explicitely defined in the terms of use.
