I'd like some advice from you guys about something. I'm participating in the Relay for Life at my university (the University of Kansas in Lawrence). Relay for Life is a twelve hour walk/run to raise money and awareness for cancer treatment.
I had thought about posting on here to ask for people to sponsor my walk, and I'm sure that many people would be interested, but my problem is this. I don't want people to worry that their donations would go somewhere other than ACS. I don't know if there's some way that I can give a receipt or whatnot as proof that I'm not taking the donations for myself.
So I guess I would like to ask for donations to sponsor me for the Relay for Life. If you are uncomfortable sending money to an individual but still want to donate, I highly suggest you go to the ACS website and donate there. If you'd like to sponsor me, send me an email, and we can work out a paypal or mailing arrangement.
Also, if anyone has any ideas on how I can make this more secure (at least as far as comfort goes), I'm all ears.
Thanks in advance.
UPDATE 4/6/05
There is something new this year that we just found out about at our meeting today. Relay for Life has set up a website where you can donate to a particular team or person. Click here if you want to learn more or would like to help sponsor me. Thanks again. |

The main thing is that people donate to the cause, right? Then it doesn't matter if they donate to you directly or the ACS Website. For those people not willing to donate to you directly you could point them to the ACS Website, thats the most secure way I see.
I did two fundraisers recently (Tsunami) and kept receipts (bank lodgements slips) to show donators where the money went in order to cover myself.
Could you post a scan of a receipt showing the amount raised and the recipient being ACS after the fundraising is done?

Even if people sponsor you, don't they write a check out to ACS anyway? So they (the people making the donations) are assured that they're money is going to the organization, plus they will probably get a letter from ACS so they can get a tax deduction for their donation (assuming they're american.) |

Podge, I wholeheartedly agree. The money goes to ACS, so whether it goes through me or not, it still gets there.
Taropatch, they do write a check to ACS, which is probably the easiest way to do it (I'm more than willing to give people my address if they're interested in sponsoring. I guess I was just thinking that more people would want to use PayPal or some other such electronic means of transferring donations. That's what I wasn't really sure how to deal with. |

muzishun,
Using paypal you should still be able to produce enough evidence of what you did with the money to satisfy any doubters, since any donations you recieve will need to be transferred to your bank account and records of this are kept at paypal, you could then post some proof that you paid it from your account to ACS, maybe a reciept from ACS or a copy of the bank transfer etc.

I agree, but our team leader encouraged us to use the online donation page as well. I think it actually makes it a bit easier. Of course, if someone wants to donate via paypal, I'm still willing to work with them on that. |
