I've been doing some research on the UK and Northern Ireland.

In the United States we have counties like the UK, but something I saw at the EU made me take a second look.

The EU lists regions for the UK and Northern Ireland:

Eastern
East Midlands
London
North East
Northern Ireland
North West
Scotland
South East
South West
Wales
West Midlands
Yorkshire and the Humber

Source: http://www.europa.eu.int/abc/maps/members/uk_en.htm

How do the British use these regions? Is it like the US where we have South, North, Southwest, Northwest, West, East, etc?

Thanks,

Etymon

Well, we use them for regional news progammes. I think it's also divided up that way for areas for MEPs, where each area will have a number of Members, depending on the areas population. It's just a way of dividing up the country into smaller, definable areas.

You mentioned counties. I think the way we use counties is the same way you use states. Each of our counties has it's own council (County Council) and then each county is divided into areas such as major towns (District and Borough councils) and then it can be further divided into Parish and Town councils.

Nearly, it's:

Country
County
City, Town, Village, etc.

The counties, cities, towns, villages, have councils a council being a governing body. A local government, being more local the more you come down the scale.
