I host my sites with a company called 1&1 who has won business host of the year award, for a number of years running. I don't know how they did this, because I'm either not seen as a valuable customer (even though I subscribe to the highest managed hosting package), or for another non-viable reason. But anyway, because of the problems I'm having with them (databases randomly losing access rights, control panels not working to allow me to reset the database rights etc etc), I'm looking at either moving elsewhere, or hosting from home. Because of the cost of hosting with other companies, I'd prefer to manage everything myself, if possible.
I'm currently connected to the internet via a 1MB broadband connection, and was wondering if this was sufficient to run websites through and surf the net. Is there any web application available which will aid me in working out how much data is processed on an average day through my sites, and how often? For example, one forum has a database of over 160MB, but what percentage of this figure is actually passed through the internet on an average forum query (I understand it depends on the number of modifications etc)?
If it's not enough to host from home, I do have the option to upgrade to a 2MB connection if needed, but what other companies do people recommend, who match approx. the prices of 1&1?
Thanks for your time! |

your 1Mb broadband only has 256K upload which is the important bit for hosting your website, this is pretty low and would not allow you to have a very busy site, even if you upgrade to 2Mb your upload will stay the same so won't help.
I run a hosting company, drop me an email. |
