First off, have you installed/started the Avatars Mod at all?

Secondly, when making changes to yur forum, its recomended that you make a back-up of your databse. also you should try testing any changes on a test forum only (test forum meaning a replica of your live forum)

As for more smilies , have a look through http://www.snitzbitz.com for Snitz Modification zipped files. also use the search function for smilies, also see this topic.

As for being afraid to impliment new modifciations, you shouldn't be afraid. If I'm not mistaken, one of the main purposes of Snitz forums is to help people to learn and understand ASP, etc.

Well in that case just go ahead and download the Avatars Mod, then follow the 'read me' instruction in the download, if you have any problems, then go to the 'Help:Mod implimentation' forum here at snitz and do a search for avatar. You should find your answer there, and if not, then post a new topic. Make sure you do a search before posting a new topic though, Good Luck

JamesK,

Don’t be!

I took over the control and implementation of my sites from a commercial ‘developer/designer’ because a: I was being excluded from the direction of my sites b: things not being implemented that I wanted and c: because it was just a bloody mess.

I knew bugger all when I started (and still do I think) but with some trial and error plus the fantastic help and support I have received from here, I have been able to reconstruct a number of forums from scratch!

I started with one of our smaller sites first and progressively installed a number of mods plus ‘stylised’ the look and feel.

I have installed 3.4.05 with PM’s, active users, file/pic uploads, chat, image resizer, Events/calendar, Avatars, spell checker, referrer mod, message icons and site integration. I changed the layout slightly and a few other minor things.

The only real advise I could give coming from a mug is this; take your time, read very carefully and backup. For example many of the line numbers change so look at the section to be changed rather than just the line numbers. It will fall into place and if it doesn’t just ask here and they are only too happy to point you in the right direction.

Some will even do the odd page for you (if you ask nicely). I have also found the search function to be a great help and found many answers without having to ask.

I found that if you do one mod at a time then completely test it before moving on to the next mod is the best way to go. And then back up with the completed mod. This way you don’t undo all the previous moded files when installing the next mod.

And as the guys have said, “backup”. If you break something you can always restore that file.

Cheers

Neil
