SaiyanJin ....

If I understand what your saying, you have IIS 5 and want it to be running your domain name? The company that is hosting your domain right now may have an option to set up a redirector so that your domain name can point to your IIS I.P Address, so if someone types in eg: www.mydomain.com, instead of going to your current host it redirects them to your IIS, but still showing your www.mydomain.com and not your IIS's I.P. Address.

Thanks intrepidone. You got it right. That's what I want to do. I'll check with my current host and see if they can do that. I still need to know how I can host my own domain, though. Thanks for all the inputs, you guys.

Thanks again Intrepidone.

First, you should check your contract for your cable modem. Most cable internet providers don't allow you to run a server unless you buy a 'commercial' service from them.

(How do you stop the text from being a URL link? Don't click the above link I made it up).
Then, assuming your server is up, easiest is to make sure you have a fixed IP address. There are some services that will do DNS mapping to dynamic IP's but it's not as sure as a fixed IP.

Then, you need to identify 2 DNS servers that will provide lookup for your domain name. Usually this is done by your ISP, although you can run your own DNS if you wish, or use one of the 3rd party DNS hosters on the web. In any case, your domain name needs a home in at least 2 servers.

Then, you register (or update) your domain name registration, and as part of the registration you will specify the DNS servers holding your name.

Then you can specify any aliases (CNAME), mail exchanger (MX) and other DNS entries. CNAMES let you identify 'www.domain.com' and 'ftp.domain.com' and 'anything.domain.com' as aliases for your real host IP address. MX records identify the email server(s) for your domain.

Last, you wait a few days for your name to propagate through the Internet DNS system, and when your domain name can be found you are on the air.

As you can see by what Doug G said it is not an easy process if you don't know what your doing.

If I am not mistaken, I think if you have your own DNS's, you have to have them registered to? Doug might know whether this is true or not.

If you are on cable modem and do have a static IP, remember that this IP address can still change at the ISP's descretion, and if that were to happen you would have to re-submit the whole 9 yards again.

Myself personally if I were to do this, I would just set up a redirector from a current Hosting company so if your IP Address did change you just change it in the redirector and your back in business in minutes, but if you don't go that route, atleast use a Hosting companies or another third parties DNS's and not your own.

Yes, if you want to run your own DNS (If you do get the book DNS & BIND from O'Reilly) you must register your DNS server as a host on the internet. It's not difficult to get the host registered, but DNS puts a fair amount of extra traffic on your bandwidth.
