This may be a dumb question but here it goes... I have a 4 port router at home that has a parallel printer port. I just got a new printer and it only has a USB cable.

Is there a cable to convert from USB to serial parallel or is that backward and stupid? Should I just connect the new printer to a PC (via USB) and then just print that way? Of course, then that PC has to be on all the time. Thanks for any advice.

There are USB to Parallel adapters out there, but if you are trying to get one retail, they usually cost about $45. I'm sure they can be gotten for less online, but I've never checked.

I would not spend that kind of money on degrading a printer's performance. Parallel is very, very slow. Getting a print server will give you better performance and more options.

I agree wholeheartedly. I just stopped working in tech retail, and I was surprised at how many people got those adapters.

have a look on Ebay for a HP JetDirect, that would be good for you.

I just replaced an older HP JetDirect EX Plus printer server with a Linksys PSUS4 PrintServer for USB with 4 port Switch. This is a USB Print Server with a 4 port switch built-in (or a 4 port switch with a USB Print Server builtin, depends on how you see it). The HP JetDirect print server was not working with a newer HP printer I got (pages would only print half way and then quit, or the page would print completely but Windows would say that the page didn't print and would keep trying to print).

It works pretty well, the only thing that I had to do is disable bi-directional communication.

I bought it at a local Office Depot because I needed it the same day, but you can find it cheaper at Buy.com or Newegg.com

here is what the back looks like, this thing is really small:

Thanks everyone. If I get a print server that connects to the router - will this be PC and Mac compatible?
