I remember AOL in the good ole days when you would download an evaluation copy and get all kinds of goodies, like ... spamware, spyware, popups, etc.
Well, I called AOL the other day to ask about what their new version was like. The guy said, "Oh, it's much more stable than it used to be." I thought, "Hmmm ..."
So, just for kicks, I thought I would initialize one of their CD's I got in the mail. It was installing for less than a minute, and I thought to myself that something just wasn't right, so I stopped, then exited.
I went online as usual and noticed that I had a new toolbar, my homepage was changed, and I had perhaps two pop-ups for every site I went to.
You know AOL has on its package "Powerful Spam and Pop-Up Blockers". And, I guess it could block these especially if it put them there! Go figure!
Now I am spending my evenings ridding myself of AOL debri! What a hassle!
The good ole days for AOL haven't disappeared at all, "...it's much more stable than it used to be."
Argh!

AOL had good ol' days? no offense, but I've always teased my friends that have AOL by saying it was "the internet for dummies".
With that said and done, I don't think AOL would do anything malicious. |

ole - (http://www.m-w.com/cgi-bin/dictionary?book=Dictionary&va=ole) <- my way ol' - (http://www.m-w.com/cgi-bin/dictionary?book=Dictionary&va=ol%27) <- your way
No offense taken.
Honestly, it's not like I have disassembled their product and looked to see what things point to where, not that I would want to use my time in that manner. Perhaps even I had pre-existing problems, and coincidentally, at the same time I partially installed AOL something else happened like an email attachment. I should research other cases of AOL installs to compare to my experience if I really want to substantiate a fair case outside of my own bias.
However, it is unfortunate for AOL, in my case, that these variables were present at the time of my install. Having gone through this before with an AOL installation and then oddly going through it again has turned my opinion towards their product in an unfavorable way.
But now my system is up-to-date and all is well. Cheers,

AOL 9 isn't too bad. The annoyance factor is way down, and with a little tweaking of the options nearly all popups go away.

LOL @ Doug! Hey ya gotta use what ya gotta use right Doug ?? I have never been happy with them since they "upgraded" AOL 4.0 to 5.0 and beyond.... I thought 4.0 was perfect but 5.0 and 6.0 definatly sealed their fate with me. |

I couldn't stand AOL until V8, and V9 is pretty tolerable. I keep my AOL account for travelling since there are local numbers in most nationwide cities and a reasonable 800# per-minute. On one trip I set up my own server to be an ISP via my 800#, but when I got the bill after a 2week trip and lots of online time, I could have paid for nearly a year of AOL fees :)
I haven't had a busy with AOL over the last year or so, in 4 or 5 different cities and some 800# connections.
