is it possible to keep IIS running (so viewers can see my website on my computer) while I'm logged off of XP?
I know its (should be) possible if I hit "switch user" instead of "log off" |

IIS should keep running even if you are logged off, it is a service. |

Only consideration is (and I don't know as XP is a desktop OS, not a server one, so there may be differences) whether anything is running in the current user context - best bet is to try it and see if it works for you! |

Ok... was playing around in IIS config and changed some settings, well all I changed was I added some default pages...
it said it had to restart IIS for effects to take effect, so I hit "yes" restart; it came up with an error message saying
"The RPC Server is unavailable"
whats RPC Server? it was either server or service, I'm not sure which it said. |

The RPC (Remote procedure call) is basically what makes your machine available to the outside world, without it IIS will not work neither will terminal services, or infact anything else which is trying to connect to the pc.
If it is unavailable, reboot the machine and try again.

Rebooted all is good now (I think)....
I've messed with IIS on Win2k before and I liked that ALOT better than this crap... is there a way I can put my IIS in my system tray? so that I can check on its status without going through control panel/admin features/iis config/status blah blah? |

How about (right-click-on-toolbar) Task Manager - you can see if the service is running PDQ! |

Keep in mind that XP Pro only allows for 10 concurrent connections for web applications. IIS on Win2K is basically the same IIS on XP Pro.
Are you trying to make yourself visible to the internet? If so then you'll also need to punch a hole for port 80 on your firewall (if you don't have one you'll need one) and you'll need to set up a DNS type of service to broadcast any friendly domains you have registered and set up. I recommend DNS2GO because it works great for those who have dynamic ip addresses (which most dsl and cable users have).

inetinfo.exe
You can also type http://localhost into your url and you should get a default web message. |

wouldn't matter, if it says "RPC service unavailable" then it has crashed, so task manager will still show it as running anyway :) plus as stimmie pointed out you can't tell which is the rpc service from taskmanager anyway, and rebooting the machine is generally the only way to get it back when it is unavailable |

I'm not ready to broadcast yet, working on it though, preparing...
is there any way I can over-ride the 10 concurrent connections thing?
I got Nortan 2k5 running... not sure if firewall is included in that, but I'm sure my DSL modem has a built in firewall, which I have no idea how to configure... and my IP addy is static, unless I reset my modem; which happens rarely.
inetinfo.exe dosnt appear in my processes, yet I can view my project via http://localhost (been doing some work locally for a while) |

if you are using asp then your iis process will be one of the dllhost.exe, but inetinfo.exe should still be in your running processes, are you displaying processes by "all" users ? |

Legally, you can not change the limitation on the 10 concurrent connections. |

10 is quite a lot of *concurrent* connections (remember HTTP is connect-request-response-disconnect) - if you need more, you want to stick it in a server farm anyway, imho. |

yes... and it appears there, but only if/when I use http://localhost to view my site... then it remains there. But I guess it dosnt run until its called upon |

but, you have to consider multiple connection by a user with different sessions and crawlers. 10 is not enough for a functional web site. |
