Currently with snitz here, subscriptions work on the basis of you subscribe to a particular topic and you are subscribed until you unsubscribe. Would it be more appropriate to unsubscribe someone after a reply has been made to a topic? The next time they visit that topic they can then subscribe again?? I've heard some people on my forum say that other places they have been to it works like this. I'm not sure which way would be the best. Do you have any ideas? |

Sounds like an odd way of doing it too. Sounds like that forum is making me work too hard to be subscribed to a topic. I understand automatic subscriptions but to automatic unsubscribe?
It would make more sense if the topic got locked that it unsubscribed them. |

IIRC Cal made a mod similar to this but slightly different, although I can't find it on the search. It was similar to the way VBulletin does it.
If you subscribe then you receive 1 email to say there is new replies to a given topic, with the text that you will not receive further emails until you view the topic / forum / category / board again. Then when you view the topic again for example, it will renable the subscription to send mails again. This is a good idea as it stops spam, but doesn't require any active input from the user when returning to view the topic to resubscribe. |

Yes altisdesign, this is what I was thinking of doing. What if some people subscribed to a topic and it had many, many replies. That's a lot of mail to go sifting through. I would re-enable the subscription when they visited that particular topic. At least it sounds logical to me. |

yes, but what If I'm away and can only follow the topic by email, doesn't your mod defeat the point of me subscribing. |

It doesn't matter because all they get is something like this...
arctic-cat-guy has replied to a topic on Snowmobile Fanatics [SF2K5] that you requested notification to. Regarding the subject - Pro X vs. X2.
I wouldn't think you would want a large stack of emails saying so and so replied with no actual reply content. That seems pointless to me. I will want to know once if it is updated. If I feel like following along, I will visit and be automatically checked to have an email sent to me the next time someone replies. |
