Hi everyone
I seem to have an automated porn poster on my message board! At regular intervals (12pm, 3am) a new member registers and always posts the same thing. All the details are the same excpet for the members name
Please have a look here at the whois info (original topic has been amended by a mod) http://www.mbuk.co.uk/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=77664
It looks like a Korean company using an automatic program to register and post.
Does anyone have any idea how I can prevent this?
Thanks for any advice, this forum is used by kids at school so it's fairly important we prevent porn links being posted!

are you using e-mail validation? Where the user has to click on a link that is e-mailed to them?
If so, you can also enable "Restrict Registration" where you will have to approve every member that registers (we have that enabled here on this forum). |

doing a whois will only tell you the company that owns the IP, it will not tell you who the actual user is, so all you have done is found out who is ISP is, you should contact their abuse email to report it, but since you have deleted the evidence, they may not do very much.
If someone is able to register automatically perhaps you should consider changing your registration process so that email addresses need to be validated, this should prevent any kind of auto signup |

Thanks for the quick replies, we are using email validation.
Thanks for the tip about enabling "Restrict Registration". I am not keen on doing this as we have a lot of new members each day. Some of them sign up in the evening/night where there would not be an admin round to approve them.
I guess if you think that's the best option we could enforce it temporarily.
Do you think there are any other ways to prevent this?
Thanks so much Clare |
