Both of my websamba accounts were hacked today, both of which replaced by hacking-software downloads (you visit the page and a virus automatically downloads to your browser, if your browser has that vulnerability)...
I would just like to let you all know changing your password on a regular basis is good practice. I had alot of information on those accounts, in which I stupidly did not back up. I lost some work...
Obviously there is some kind of vulnerability with websamba and their password system
Just a heads up |

Yeah, same happened to my testsite at Websamba.
Hackers are truly scum of the earth. |

It is such a shame the respectable term 'Hacker' has become connected with piracy, theft and vandalism. I totally agree that the folks who do this are grade A-1 selfish greedy b******, and indeed they need a classification (may I suggest 'criminals'), but please think twice before taking the mass media's easy route of further sullying the name of 'hacker'!!!
Reclaim the name (as with 'nigger', 'dyke', etc have been more or less successfully reclaimed by their own communities)!!! Hackers want to learn stuff, and so will look at things to work out how systems work. That's it. They play, they do not damage, they do not break laws, they are just curious. Criminals/thieves steal things. Vandals damage and deface things. The true hacker community hates these people every bit as much as you do - I assure you. |

actually they do break the law but you are correct in saying that true hackers are not about causing damage |

It's only breaking the law if you invade someone else's server, not explore/fix/hack your own ;-) |

When they entitle themselves as "hackers" by putting up "This site hacked by xxxx" then I can call them hackers. Because thats what they did, they "hacked" into my site. |

If I called myself a mechanic and messed up your car, would I be a mechanic or remain a vandal? |

a hacker is a hacker is a hacker. There are good hackers, and bad hackers.
There are good mechanics and bad ones (who could mess up your car)
Whenever damage is caused by either of the above, intentionally then they are also vandals....
So we have vandal mechanics, vandal hackers or maybe just vandal web designers who stumbled on a password or two.
There are good and bad folk in just about every profession, group, demonimation you care to think about.... Words can be twisted many ways, and frankly who cares what they are called as long as people understand that bad eggs exist among the good and to take precautions. |

But the point is that there are many honest people in those professions. |

Not in question, Dave - I totally agree there are many honest people in every profession and other logical grouping of the population (with the exception of the groupings 'liars', 'thieves', etc!).
Point is, the grouping called 'hackers' has been misunderstood and demonised (in a similar way to 'estate agents', 'lawyers', etc), and I think we should stand up and be counted, and ask people to stop using an incorrect term and stealing and debasing what was once seen as a complimentary term!! Most lazy journalists will just compound the negative image to sell copy - but some sites like theregister.co.uk, ntk.net are a bit more particular, and tend to confuse the terms a lot less ;-) |
