I don't know if you guys have heard or read it yet, but it's the hottest thing since Snitz Forums.

The final version 1.0 of the Mozilla Firefox browser is now out.

I am still wavering on FF. i can't access some work Intranets with it. Otherwise I really love it.
When I upgraded it was smart enough to find all the extensions and themes I installed and inactivate the ones that no longer work with 1.0. Unfortunately it was most of what I installed. I wasn't too happy about that. There are very few themes currently available, unless you like cat prints for icons.

They do have a pretty cool FTP extension, FireFTP.

They have also updated Thunderbird. Now this I love!!! It is an amazing replacement for Outlook Express. But that too has been upgraded and I lost some extensions and themes.

Anyone using an older versoin of FF should upgrade imediatly. Several security bugs were found.

I do think its sick how the media doesn't paint the security flaws in an open source project as harshly as they do security flaws in non open source projects. The bugs that were recently acknoledged in firefox 0.x earned a "moderatly critical" or something similar from most of the media while a similar bug in IE would have earned an "extremely critical" for sure.

For sure Nathan. Any security risk in IE could compromise your entire Operating System. Not just your browser. Firefox isn't tied into your system like IE is. So probably why the bugs aren't rated higher on the scale.

Thats why I said a 'similar bug'. I didn't say a 'more serious bug'.

And these bugs compromised the file system, which is in all intents and purposes compromising the operating system.

I have to say that I finally like Firefox.
1.0 is a lot faster than previous versions for me, so I guess I'll use it a lot more from now on.

My MODs:
Birthdays - Custom Policy - F.A.Q. Administration - Forum Rules - Guestbook
Links Manager - MyOwnGoogle - Profile Views - Search Log - WebSearch

Useful stuff:

I don't use Firefox as my main browser, but I am using it at work so I can keep cookies/bookmarks/etc. separate from my work computer.

I am using this: Portable Firefox 1.0 on a USB Memory key.

Firefox is still a pain in the ASS. I just spent 3 hours rewriting 8 lines of javascript which parsed an xml document so that it worked in Firefox, it is now over 40 lines of javascript just to do the same thing, and takes >10 times as long to parse the XML in firefox. than it does in IE

Firefox has been crashing lately on me (more than once per day)... I dont know if its somethign with my computer or what...

But browsin around the features, I havnt noticed an update-notification or auto-update feature... I looked on the mozilla website and didnt find anything there either.

I'm assuming there is none (yet)... just wondering if anyone might know anything about this.

Click on Tools and then goto Options. In the Options dialog box, click on the Advanced button on the left side of the box. In the Advanced section, scroll down until you get to the section labeled Software Update. To check now, just click on the Check Now button, otherwise, it checks for updates periodically. I do remember seeing the update in action in one of the preview releases. There was a bugfix, and it showed a link (I think it was in the bottom right hand corner of the browser) to initiate the upgrade.
