I did some searching but did not find an answer. I'm moving my site/forum to a new server at the same ISP.

My files have already been copied to the new server, but I assume it will take 24-48 hours for the dns to point to the new server. Files are also still on the previous server.

What do you all suggest for my forum in the meantime? Shut it down? Is there a way to make it read only until my domain name resolves to the new server? Any suggestions?

There is no way to make it read only, unless you chose to lock all the forums. How have you upgraded the database.

What do you mean? In the config.asp?

What would you do? Shut down the forum until the dns change takes effect?

- shut down the forum
- copy the db to the new server
- redirect the DNS
- sit and wait for propagation

I've moved 3 forums that way within the last week, not a problem at all.

Ok, I think I'm good. Just waiting for propagation. Thanks for the info.

I ended up locking all forums on the old server. Then initiated the transfer.

Once I could access the forum on the new server, I unlocked the forums. People are starting to post but propagation is not complete. Today on the old server, I put up a default.asp and active.asp page saying "The forum has moved. You should automatically see the new server within 24-48 hours."

In retrospect, I should have also closed new registrations. Probably closing the forum completely would have been best, but it was nice to have the "read-only" posts yesterday.
