Just wondering how most of you web developers go about with domain registrations. Is it common practice for smaller ISPs with web development capability to completely lock down ownership of a client's domain? By this I mean that even though the domain registrant name correctly reflects the organization owning the domain, all contacts (especially technical & administrative) are from the ISP organization and not the registrant organization who supposedly owns (and pays!!) for the domain. I've come across two domains now where I've been asked by their registrant owners to take responsibility and move them to a different host. But it is very difficult to change hosts when the contacts of authority are not with the registrant organization and refuse to co-operate.
I look after a couple non-profit organization domains and several domains where I work, and in all cases I've made sure I wasn't the only contact of authority. I would think this should be standard fare on every domain.
Thanks ya all in advance for your thoughts...

Sadly, most Family Court Judges wrongfully reward opportunistic gold diggers that use our children unjustly as "instruments" of power.

The few I have for others I registered in the customer's name, I used the owner as the Billing contact, me as the Administrative contact, and the ISP as the technical contact. |

Yes, I've struck one (not so friendly) ISP recently ... well, I don't think they were an ISP, just a hosting company, who had all the domains locked down so tight that it took me 3 weeks to get the domains transferred onto another server. The actual owner is really stuffed in this situation because all transactions must go via the email contact, and some times they don't have the domain owner's interest in mind.
Funnily enough, I follow exactly the same procedure and have all contact details coming to me, but then I also know that I would quite willingly pass on all emails to their rightful owner. |

I generally try and keep all domains in the customers name but will leave myself as the technical contact. For transfers the authorisation emails usually go to the administrative contact, so that means the customer gets it, and doesn't have to bother me if they want to transfer away from me. |
