Hi Ho --
Yup...been through the FAQs, been through the forums, used the "Search" functions...but..
Sometimes, you have to ask the really obvious & dumb question...
where would a good place to do that?
Since I am a newbee to this forum, but not to forums in general, this is basically a Snitz culture question, specifically, the ability to administer and change M_USERNAME to a different value but retain the forum message statistics.
Thanks muchly,

I believe you're in the right place... either here or database anyway...
You can change it by downloading the snitz db and opening it with Access, and then changing the pertinent information, OR write an asp script to do it for you on the webserver. |

Thank you for your very prompt response.
I was afraid of that especially after reviewing the source code. Although I would be very comfortable directly altering the database.
Unforunately, I do not have direct access to the source database or ASPs. (ISP-supported-provided Service) I was hoping to might be an Administrator level function which would be a privilege I could acquire. Unfortunately, accessing the source DB and ASPs is not permitted by the ISP. They wouldn't be interested in any non-traditional "1-off" support functions such as this.
However, I will go on record as saying that I find Snitz Forums to be a very good piece of ASP open source software. My experience lies largely in Unix/PHP/Apache/Perl/mySQL-based portals/forums/websites. I just have not been successful finding open source ASP-based software. Snitz was a very pleasant and welcome surprise.
Kudos to the Snitz Community.

If you're an Admin, you can simply edit the user profile and change the name.
If you're NOT admin you still need edit access to the database, but using Table Editor will save you downloading the database. |

Actually, yes...I believe this is what we would like to do. People would like to have their display names be changed. Most in the community are new to forum software and are learning the "culture" tidbits like...you can be someone else and use a fun display name which could be different than your account/username.
Unfortunately, I am not fluent in SnitzSpeak to speak effectively with the gurus which obviously resides on this forum.
Perhaps I should restate the problem in a more detailed and effective fashion.
- A martial arts school recently purchased a web/website services package from a firm specializing in this type of business.
- Provide an ASP-based website and web content services for said martial arts school including a "student-only section" which includes forums supported by Snitz Forums 2000 software...yeah!
- Forums become active, people then realize that they could select a display/username that does have to be their actual names.
- Our ability to edit our profile information, i.e. email addresses, signatures, etc, etc... appears to be disabled
- No one seems to have admin. privilege except for one userid which I appear with have the password
- My requests to their technical go unanswered.
- One or two of the user community are technically literature in forum technology, just not Snitz Forums.
- One of the technically literature (ie. myself) doesn't have the Snitz vocab. to ask the question in a succinct manner which could be answered most readily by the web's Snitz Gurus.
- Problem Statement : People wish to change their "username" as it appears in the forums without having to create another account/username, thus preserving the forum well-earned posting statistics.
According to a previous post in this thread, It looks like if I can get admin. privs, I should be able to accomplish what needs to be done. (I think)
Of course, if there any other practical suggestions, I would be grateful.
Thank for your patience and tolerance... |

Dont think you can do this from your profile, your username is your display name, unless your talking about the title (IE "admin" or "average member")...
There IS mod for this however, because I have seen it on other forums, finding it is another story. |

Ah...thank you...the username is the display name is an important association. According to the database file that I downloaded along with the source code (for education purposes, I don't run an IIS webserver personally...yet... ) it appears that if I can edit the database and specifically the FORUM_MEMBERS table and M_USERNAME field. The summary postings stats appears to be associated with only the MEMBER_ID field in FORUM_MEMBERS. Again, I have only performed a cursory look.
I would suspect their would be a mod to accomplish these types of tasks.
No biggie...time will sort this out, one way or another.

All users are identified in the database by their member id's, not the names. Changing user names can be accomplished by the admin, but that will also change the user login data, since the name is part of that data. All member statistics and other info are not affected by the name change, as it would be to expected.
I know I have read requests for this feature that you're also asking, but I'm not sure whether it has been written. You can have a look at snitzbitz.com to see if there is anything there.

ruirib -
Thank you for your insight into this matter. As I suspected, all of the easy problems have been solved.

You're welcome.
I've tried to search for any mod related to this, and I found one for version 3.3.x, which is probably of no big help, since there were many changes from 3.3.x. to 3.4.x. I didn't save the link, but I will find it again if you want. |
