It enables people to retrieve E-mail from Outlook and Outlook Express, documents from Microsoft Office, chat sessions from AOL IM, and Web pages viewed with Internet Explorer.
By Gregg Keizer, TechWeb News

Google Inc. has unveiled its long-anticipated desktop application for searching through files, E-mail, and Web histories on the local PC, beating competitors such as Microsoft and Yahoo Inc. in the bargain.

Google Desktop Search, which can be downloaded free of charge from the company's Labs site, enables people to retrieve E-mail from Outlook and Outlook Express, documents from Microsoft Office apps, chat sessions from AOL Instant Messenger, and Web pages viewed with Internet Explorer.

Once the local hard drive is indexed--a process that can take hours but is done in the background during moments when the PC is idle--users can search for local information by accessing a tool from the Windows taskbar, from the Google toolbar in Internet Explorer, or from the Google URL.

I just read about it here.
From the article:

Sounds cool, anyone tried it yet?

It uses up 15mb of memory when doing the indexing. But the indexing is one time. After that, the search is FAST. Less than a second and the results are shown.

It's still indexing for me.

you can also use lookout (the Outlook add-on) to index all your disk-files - it's pretty sharp too, and doesn't tell anyone about your jpeg/mp3 collection ;-)

I installed it and it is still indexing.

However, I really like it, specially the e-mail threaded search. I think it's great. I'd like it to be a bit more customizable, but it's good as it is right now.

One question, do you know if this engine exposes any API that can be used to run local searches? It could be useful in order to get rid of Index Server

Best Regards

THAT would be excellent, however I can't see Google allowing it.

I installed it about a week ago. I really like it. I often need to search my Outlook mail for a specific word from old e-mail. I thought I made the clever idea of creating folders to try and store it in so I could more easily find it. I now see that after many years and tens of thousands of e-mails it's a mess.

Google Desktop handles it easily.

Plus it only indexes when the system is idle.

So does it, or doesn't it find all files like PSD, txt, xml, asp, etc? The little FAQ wasn't very clear on that, and without the ability to find any file I might be looking for, it's not going to be worth the indexing wait.

Roland, it lists on the website what type of files it indexes. And it does find all of them.
- Outlook / Outlook Express
- Word
- AOL Instant Messenger
- Excel
- Internet Explorer
- PowerPoint
- Text

So no, it won't index ASP, XML or PSD files. At least, not yet anyway.

Hi, Roland.

Even though my google desktop says that it is still scanning, I think it has scanned enough to have an answer for your question.

I can tell you regarding text formats that it is scanning .txt, .h, .c and .cpp files. It is NOT indexing contents in .ini, .asp or .html files (I mean local html files, of course. If you browse them, they'll be indexed as web content, not as files).

I don't know about PSD files.

Best Regards

it also finds png, wmv, tif, pdf and zip, but not eps and other files that I actually need. At least it also indexes drives other than just the C:\ drive, otherwise it'd have been completely useless. At least I can find emails and images easily now.

I had hoped it'd at least store the file names of all files, but if that had been the case it couldn't have been done so fast.

Sometimes it shows a strange behaviour, at least in my opinion.

If you enter "default" as the search string, the search results will show all compatible files (including bmp, tifs...) located, for instance, in C:\default\bin\..., highlighting the "default" substring in the path as the match.

I don't know if it's intentional or a bug, I certainly don't like it.

Best Regards

Well keep in mind it's still in beta. If you think you found a bug you can contact them about it.

I think it's awesome. Saved my butt in the first day trying to find an email that Outlook took forever to not find. It's incredibly fast...instantaneous is more like it.

It's got 200,000+ items indexed on my box and it finds them super fast. For example, I did a search for "Hello" and it found 3,713 emails, 5 files, and 48 web pages that I've visited in 1.59 seconds.

It's also pretty cool because if you're searching regular Google, there's a spot on the top that shows you have results locally as well! Email threaded view is killer, too... Great stuff.

This sounds neat, I might just try it. A question tho: how much disk space, in reality, does it use for all the indexing. My laptop has a 30 gig hard drive, about 25 gig of which is full. I have a lot of email in outlook, and a TON of files. I use Netscape not IE so not that many pages in my IE history. I can't afford to give it my remaining 5 gig for the test. What have you all found with regard to disk usage?

Homeacademy, it says it requires 1 GB of space.
