We are going to undertake an enormous system validation where we will need to capture many screens.
I have heard of two tools that we can consider, one is SnagIt, the other Camtasia, both by TechSmith.
Has anyone used one of these, or another they can recommend?
What type of file does it ave to, how is it read, and what might a file size be?
Thanks. |

The only one I use is the Print Screen button and paste into something like Photoshop. It goes Print, Alt-Tab, Ctrl-V, Alt-Tab, Print, Alt-Tab, Ctrl-V, Alt-Tab, so on and so forth. |

As far as I know both are used quite a lot. They either capture the entire screen, the active window, or a pre-set area of your screen. Most programs save to JPG files in a directory you get to pick, but you should also be able to pick AVI as the capture source to make simple videos (huge files though).
I use the capture program that comes with the Corel Graphics Suite. It's never failed me so far. |

SnagIt is awesome. It'll save to just about any file type you'd like, and there are multiple settings you can make (full screen capture, open window, certain areas). I've got it running all the time in the toolbar so it's instantly available when I need it (I typically capture just selected areas). |

So with SnagIt, do I need to actually tell it to capture as with the manual Windows method? Does Camtasia continue to do a continuous capture? We'll have many thousands of screens we need to capture and I don't want to miss any.
Thanks for the great replies. |

SnagIt is the one I have used for the last few years, it has lots of options and works well.
Not sure if this helps its from the help file: ========================================================= Available for IMAGE and TEXT captures.
NOTE: Capture Timer does not apply to VIDEO captures.
The Capture Timer feature of SnagIt allows you to set the program up to capture screens at predefined times. This can be useful, for example, for batch processes that run on a regular basis and require screen shots as part of their output.

There is a usable free capture tool included in MS HTML Help Workshop.

if you have One Note installed (part of office 2k3, so you may have it through Select or MSDN or somesuch) using the windows-key + s will allow selective screen capture (copies to clipboard and also pastes into a onenote note for keepsies)
also remember ALT (Or 'AltGr' - wtf is AltGrrrrrrr anyway? sounds violent) + PrtSc will copy the top window only to clipboard - vv useful imho |

I checked out the information, screenshots and "videos" for both SnagIt and CaptureWizPro, and I think SnagIt would be the better. CaptureWizPro just looks like someone's pet project with rather limited options, where SnagIt looks a lot more professional with several capture "profiles" (apparently you can add your own too). |

btw if you want to capture 'videos' don't write off Windows Media Encoder (free d/l from Microsoft.com) |
