Hi All,
As many of you know I'm moving to the UK.
One of the things I wanted to know was if I can still watch my DVD / VHS tape collection on a UK TV.
Coming from the US or Japan, VHS tapes are in the NTSC format. (I think?) Does anyone know what format the UK uses?
Thanks.

Forget I asked. It looks like you can get VCRs in the UK that can play the US/Japanese NTSC video tapes.
I think I'll just bring my Japanese DVD and VCR players to the UK. Now I've got to go shopping for voltage converters. |

Woah!!! just to clarify - UK is all PAL (you'll be pleasantly surprised at the 625-line quality after using NTSC), and yes, whilst some VCR's can play back NTSC tapes, just remember the TV will need PAL signal, which I don't know if your DVD/VCR will provide to the TV unit.
also...
TV is all going digital in the UK right now, with 'freeview' digital converters (and some build directly into TV's) for appx £50 now - the TV arena is changing a lot, so you may want to come and get all cross-compatible kit when you arrive - and UK is no longer as shockingly expensive for electronics as it used to be, there are deals to be had, especially online (try dabs.com, empiredirect.co.uk)
my 2p again, hth :) |

Thanks for the tip. We are actually going to get a UK TV, so I'll keep it in mind.
However, I was actually thinking of taking the Japanese TV along too as a TV for my son. We've got quite a few of those Japanese transformer/kung fu/action ranger type videos that he just loves to watch over and over again. I'd still need a TV for my xbox. Plus, the company's paying the moving charges.
I've got some time to think about what to do. I doubt I'll be able to set foot in the UK until about end of November.
