I strongly advice you not to add background music to your forum (or site), most people find it annoying and (like me) leave sites like that immediately.

Do a Google Search, you'll find numerous examples.

My MODs:
Birthdays - Custom Policy - F.A.Q. Administration - Forum Rules - Guestbook
Links Manager - MyOwnGoogle - Profile Views - Search Log - WebSearch

Useful stuff:

On the contrary, by all means do add it but set the default to "sound off". Then everyone can be happy!

In order for music to work successfully, you will need to have some part of your page that remains static within the browser, else, as pages change, the music will be interrupted.

OneWayMule is correct but if you are to do it then do as stever says. You really need to have a frame site so the background music will always stay on and not stop and start with each page load. I would look for a flash sound player so that way it would be nice to have a stop & start button. Then you can stream in mp3 files and even allow them to change what song they want to listen to.

either that or just do a link to a small page to open with a choice of different songs.
