Hello
One of my users did a search which returned a large number of results (about 50)
He clicked into one of the search results to read the posts and then clicked back.
he was then presented with thew source code (presumably of the search page) ie:
<!--INCLUDE FILE="LangMODS_Ls3kAU4_1030.asp" --><!--INCLUDE FILE="LangMODS_Ls3kAU4_1033.asp" --><!--INCLUDE FILE="LangMODS_Ls3kAU4_1034.asp" --><!--INCLUDE FILE="LangMODS_Ls3kAU4_1036.asp" --><!--INCLUDE FILE="LangMODS_Ls3kAU4_1037.asp" --><!--INCLUDE FILE="LangMODS_Ls3kAU4_1041.asp" --><!--INCLUDE FILE="LangMODS_Ls3kAU4_1043.asp" --><!--INCLUDE FILE="LangMODS_Ls3kAU4_1046.asp" --><!--INCLUDE FILE="LangMODS_Ls3kAU4_1053.asp" --><!--INCLUDE FILE="LangMODS_Ls3kAU4_2070.asp" -->

etc etc
Apparently this does not happen when fewer search topics are found (say 6)
Does anyone know why this is happening? Could it be a caching issue on the server or client?
I've had similar complaints on another forum where users click back (from reading a post to the list of posts) and can't see any text - they have to refresh (I've experienced this myself once too)
Thanks for any advice Clare

Could someone advise if they think this is a caching issue?
Many thanks Clare |

Hi ruirib,
Thanks for responding.
I haven't been able to reproduce the source code showing on screen after clicking 'back' from the search results page.
However, on several occassions I have been browsing the forum and clicked 'back' from within a post so find a blank screen. I managed to get a screenshot of this http://www.cyclingplus.co.uk/images/forum_issue.jpg
Clicking refresh solves the problem but I wonder if there's an issue that I need to address causing this as it's only started recently.
My forum is at http://www.cyclingplus.co.uk/forum
Many thanks for helping Clare |

Hi Clare,
I have never seen such a thing happening. IMO it's quite likely a browser issue, since the back function is browser function and there have been no other users complaining, as I understood from what you posted. Can you tell me what browser was the user using? Did it happen more than once to him?
The refresh issue looks normal to me. I wouldn't worry too much about it unless it happened to more users. |

Hi ruirib,
Thanks for responding.
I haven't been able to reproduce the source code showing on screen after clicking 'back' from the search results page. The one user who mentioned this uses IE (not sure which version but I can find out if necessary)
Clicking 'back' from within a post to find a blank screen as per http://www.cyclingplus.co.uk/images/forum_issue.jpg has happened to several users (including myself) on 2 of my forums several times. I use Win XP Pro and IE 6
The IIS was recently set to have 'Enable content expiration' unchecked. I wonder if this could be causing the problems?
Thanks Clare |

No, I don't think that would be the cause for the problems. Regarding the refresh, that does not look to me like something weird. |

Hiya
Thanks for your opinion - so just to confirm, you don't think the blank screen/having to refresh is anything to worry about? You think it's client side?
Thanks Clare |

Yeah, I think it's not something to worry about and the solution for the issue is pretty simple, anyway. Yeah, I would say it's probably client side. And the change you described just stops the browser to resubmit a server request for the same page, since the page's contents are, because of the change, considered not to have expired, since the page was first requested. This basically means that a cached copy of the page will be used, if available, instead of asking the server for the page again. |

I agree with ruirib that the blank screen is probably nothing to worry about unless it becomes a pain.
As for the user who's browser displayed code, that's another story. I don't think this could happen unless the server did not interpret the ASP. So that would have to be a server issue - a condition no one wants to see occur because of possible security issues. I think that may require some more investigation. |

Thank you for your comments!
I will post back if the blank screen thing becomes a frequent issue/problem and ask my hosting company to investigate the ASP showing on screen.
Cheers, Clare |
