Hello,

I've been tring to figure out how to cure the new auto spam detection used by email providers like yahoo, hotmail, etc...I've narrowed it down to the subject line or something inside the email by process of elimination. It's not the domain name or the mail server because I've tried changing them and still get forum sent mail sent to bulk. So it's got to be the way the forum is sending the mail or the way the subject line is phrased.

So I was wondering if anyone has already figured out a solution or has made changes that have made some improvement on narrowing the amount of forum sent mail being sent to bulk?

How are you sending the email, using CDONTS?

Both Yahoo and Hotmail check to see if the email is relayed and classify it as spam if it is.
If you are sending through CDONTS then the email is being relayed.

Quote from this thread - http://www.iis-resources.com/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?topic_id=884&forum=3&viewmode=flat&order=ASC&start=40

Ok , i have found the reason your emails are going to the bulk folder. Yahoo and lycos' both verify that the email address that is sending the message comes from a valide address by doing a drop email.(test email to the address but not actule sending any data) This way they get a rcpt to: 250 ok. So my though is that you have your mail relayed though your real email service. If you dont have any i can offer you this for free. For 10 mailbox's .this will help you witht he junk mail. let me know if you need anyfurther help.

Ok...I tried all the different mail options in admin control but the only mail that gets delivered is through CDONTS and CDOSYS. Both setups send the mail to the bulk folder. I read the article and it seems like they have the same problem. I didn't see anything on how to fix the "being sent to bulk folder" problem so my next question is:

What do I have to do (step by step) to set up the forum mail so it gets sent to the inbox and not a bulk mail folder?

Can you post the headers of the mail which is delivered to the bulk folder?

When the email is delivered to the Yahoo bulk folder, click "Full headers" on the right.

Copy the following information to an email to me and I'll see if I can spot anything which might be causing it to be delivered to the bulk email folder.

This is from a spam I received at my Yahoo account.

Thanks Podge for doing this,

Here's one from a new signup verification.

It's not the .us in the title. I removed it and it still goes to bulk.

I cannot tell enough from those headers to be any use to you.

If you send one to foto @ eircom.net (without spaces) the same way as above I might be able to tell more.

Yes I had it down to letters only and they still they go to bulk. This only happens on major web-mail names like yahoo, hotmail, etc... I thought this may have been a common problem for all of us because of the new auto detection that these big name web-mail co's are using. Do you have this problem? If not exactly how do you have your mail set up?

Is your mail server - 66.102.135.130/haw-66-102-135-130.vel.net ?

Yesterday it was on about 4 blacklists, its on one today.
http://www.dnsstuff.com/tools/ip4r.ch?ip=66.102.135.130

I also think that you should be using an email address on the mail server domain. If you are using a vel.net mail server and the from address is a different domain, then its considered relayed or forged. If your host gave to a vel.net address, try using it as the sender.

Thanks Podge and HuwR for all the help. It looks like it's the IP address that's being black-listed. I've never sent spam in my life so it must be the work of internet terrorists or my competition tring to cause me problems I would assume.

It may also be because spam has been sent out by another customer of your host through the same mail server. They would need to contact the blacklist(s) in question in order to get the i.p. removed.

If you use CDOSYS you may be able to set it up to send the email through the email address your ISP gave you when you signed up with them.

Wrap your IP into the search box on the SPEWS website to see if they've blacklisted you. I know Hotmail usethese guys and I think Yahoo! may do as well.
