So you hate it because it's missing a few features that you feel it should have? So is that any reason to strongly deter others from using this database? Maybe if the server crashes a lot or randomly wipes out data from the database, but not because it is missing some features. :-/

Shaggy, MySQL is as good as any database out there, despite sr_erick's strong feelings towards it. It's definetly a good move from an Access database, especially when your site has grown. It's speed is comparable to a MS SQL server.

The following article should also help you (or point you in the right direction) to convert your database to a MySQL database.
http://dev.mysql.com/tech-resources/articles/migrating-from-microsoft.html

There is also the MySQL forum which users has posted many topics about converting to a mysql database.

Good luck.

Here are a couple of links explaining more in depth some of the "gotchas" as they call them.

http://vulcanus.its.tudelft.nl/~acm/got/antimysql.php

Specification Comparisions:

I'll use it any day over Access but if I have MSDE or any sort of MSSQL db platform i'll go that route first. I'm not saying it's bad for EVERYONE. I just don't like it, it doesn't fit me.

For beginners, the GUI that Enterprise Manager offers really helps out too.

You cant go claiming its not a true DBMS just because it doesn't measure up to MS Sql Server!

I use MySQL at work and have been very impressed with it. Its alot more pleasent writing sql for than the microsoft products.

It seems the other big boy toys support all of these things. What is it to you that makes it a true DBMS? I'm just curious...i've heard lots of arguments in both directions. Some like it, some don't. I'm not going to sit and argue over personal preferences. I gave an opinion about it. That's all.

OK, after much deliberation, I've decided to go with MySQL as it's the cheaper option and I can't afford to be spending any more money on my site. So, where do I start? I'd like to familiarise myself with the workings of it before I convert my database but, as I said, I'm completely clueless. First off, what software do I need to create/maintain a MySQL database?

I recomend "My Sql Control Center" avalible from mysql.org

You will probably need to create the database through your control panel.

The snitz installer can be used to create the tables you will need.

That, my friend, is just a matter of opinion, and I beg to disagree . I think it's precisely the other way around .

Thanks again, Nathan.

Davio, this query isn't directly related to Snitz, I'm just trying to figure out the basics of MySQL. But, if you feel this would be better suited in the MySQL forum, I'll start a new topic there.

Yes definatly, opinion and style. I didn't mean to try to pass it off as anything but opinion.

Nate once you got Rui involved in a topic concerning ms sql vs mysql, you need to back away slowly and don't look back.

Shaggy, the Code-Support ASP (Non Forum Related) forum sounds like a good place.

MySQL is a fine dbms. It's stable, fast, and pretty easy to maintain. I've ported some of my internal MSSQL Server db's to MySql on a linux server, and the VB/Access front ends required very little tweaking to work with MySQL.

MSSQL Server is a fine dbms. It's stable, fast, and pretty easy to maintain. I use MSSQL Server both internally and externally, and many web based apps took very little tweaking to work with MSSQL Server.

That's my comparison.

C'mon, that was just a small comment... but you really wouldn't expect me to stand away from a discussion in which I would have the opportunity to bash MySQL, would ya David ?
