If anyone is interested, here's some information about the beta of SQL Server 2005 Express Edition (previously known as MSDE).

I downloaded the Visual Web Dev 2005 Express too which I presume is the WebMatrix replacement, it's good! Can't see what it would be lacking compared to Visual Studio 8 though.

What do you guys use as a front end to this thing? I have Enterprise manager, but my friend does not... Is there a publicly available SQL 2005 utility out yet?

There's no GUI for SQL Server 2005 Express yet.

The thing I'm missing most though is some decent documentation on the new features.

I've read some articles about some of the new features but a proper manual would be better.

I guess that's why they call it the beta...

Yeah in MSDE you have the workload governor which limits the amount of concurrent sql transactions to 5 (or 8, not sure). In the 2005-Express version the only limit is supposed to be 1 processor and the use of 1 GB RAM. As there is as well no limitation for the amount of databases this can be quite interesting in terms of hosting a few forums with a free sql backend.

Maybe that's MSs response to the fact that everybody is going for MySQL.

I wonder if Visual Web Dev is sufficient for web apps? I have VS.NET and it offers more than I need since I don't intend on doing window forms. Does anyone knoe whether VWD will do all web dev that VS does?

Oh of course yea, the connection limitations of MSDE. I thought you meant as it got more load, it was slower. Anyways, does the SQL Server 2005 express work with hyperthreading?

That's exactly what I meant. There is no connection limitation in MSDE - that's often misunderstood.

The Flash demonstration is a good way to understand it.
