Speaking with a fellow Snitz'er tonight we were talking about what the best laptop's are because I just purchased a HP Pavilion za7140us. If you had to list 3 brands in order of what you would buy, what order would they be in? Here is my list.....
- Dell
- HP
- Sony
Yes I do think Dell is better then HP even though I just bought a HP. The only reason I did was because I had to have it the same day. |

When you say best, do you mean the best without thinking about the price? |

Compaq/HP (preferably compaq design rather than HP) - currently I have a presario 1535 AJP (for raw power not many things come close) - My brother currently has one, for graphics it is by far the best laptop I have seen, comes with a 128Mb Radeon 9000! Dell (wouldn't touch them with a barge pole, ) - I have had three of these, they all fell to bits in less than 6 months. Toshiba (reasonably ok) - Have used a few of these, they are pretty rugged and dependable but generally are lacking in power/ram |

heh YMMV .. I've had 3 IBM's do the same, my Dells on the other hand seem to just keep on going no matter how many times I drop them.
If I had the $$$ I'd get an Alienware lappy though personally :) |

1. Dell ... been using them since 1995. FANTASTIC!!. Actually, my 1995 model is now my wife's laptop she uses on a daily basis. A plodder by today's standards, but runs everything she needs and is bulletproof.
2. Sony ... I imported a sub-notebook from Japan several years ago - bit bigger than a PDA but a fantastic device.
3. hmmmm ... where I work now they use IBM. Nice & light, but you wouldn't want to call Support, it takes too long to get them fixed. Probably Compaq or Toshiba but I haven't use either. |

I've been very happy with my Compaq laptop. It's getting on in years now tho.
I've had Dells and Toshibas from work. If portability isn'T a big issue, I'd get a Compaq or a Dell. If portability is an issue, I'm more inclined to lean toward the Toshibas even though they feel a bit flimsy. It's probably a Japan thing, but the notebooks they sell here go from small and light to smaller and even lighter still. Wow!
Alienware... Yeah....

Thats very odd. I have really never heared anyone say anything bad about dell computers. What fell apart on them? I am wondering if the manufacture them in a difference place then the ones we get here in the US |

I've only had one Dell laptop, and aside from the built-in CD-RW drive everything important has always worked (PS2 port died on me too)
I'll start using it again soon to play with Linux/Apache/PHP |

I tend to prefer a Sony, Dell, or IBM. I like the Sony design but the one I have now has a P4 in it and it isn't a mobile chip. It likes to suck the battery down pretty fast. The next laptop I get will probably have a centrino in it. I figure, why get a heavy laptop that sucks a lot of power when laptops were made for portability. I want something that is easy on power. |

I have an IBM T-30. I like the "feel" better than the Dell's I've tried out. I got some support package where I can mail them the lap top which unforuntately I've used already. Not sure what went wrong - they had to reformat the HDD. It was easy though. They overnighted a shipping box with overnight labels to ship to their facility. Relatively painless and was without lap top for about 3-4 days. |

OK, I perfer the Dell, as I use them at work and at home. The one at home is like the one at work, and it just keeps going, well for over 2 years now (time for that upgrade). Although the battery in them doesn't hold it's power all that good.
I have a Toshiba for the oldest daughter and that has been fixed twice now in 2 years. Power connection on notebook died, the the hard disk died, and the replacement one is starting to die now. So I would never buy another Toshiba.
These are my personal opinions and experiences with these types of notebooks.

We have just got hold of 4 Sony VGNA197XP Laptops.
One word to describe them STUNNING!
See them at http://products.sony.co.uk/productdetailvaio.asp?id=10_179_6650
The best features include:
Ultra-bright twin lamp 17.0” LCD WUXGA Screen (1920 x 1200) which is incredible, the best TFT I've ever seen! 1GB Ram as standard 8* DVD±RW drive 126MB Memory Stick Built In
very pricey though! |
