Don't know if I'm out of place posting this here but I just wanted to get some feedback on the new template (including a preview of some new smilies) I'm working on for my site which will also be applied to the forums. Th ereason I'm posting it now rather than waiting until I have an alpha or beta ready to go is because I'm anticipating quite a lengthy development time, especially when it comes to the forums which I am going to attempt to recode to be fully XHTML1.1 and CSS3 compliant complete with a division based layout (as opposed to tables). I'm also going to be modding the forums heaviy to strip out any redundant code and any features/functions we do not use. I'll be keeping a 'blog of sorts of all the work I do on the forums which hopefully will be helpful to others in customising their own sites.

Thanks, man. It's just the template at the moment; nothing's working. Will be starting work on the non-snitz elements of the site tomorrow.

Looks awesome mate!
But that's not very helpful, so I'll give you some constructive criticism...feel free to ignore
How about little bits of very light blue, to break up the amount of grey? Maybe just in the headers of each part of the table? ...ok, that's the only criticisms I can think of right now
Nah, it looks great |

Thanks for all the feedback, folks.
Oli, OWM When I started on this template I experimented with a few different colours - mainly blue headers (a similar blue to yours OWM) and red rollovers - but they didn't really work for me so I deliberately went with the monochromatic look (i.e., it's supposed to be too much grey). If ye think, though, that it really is too much, I might try pulling the blue back in and fiddling around with it a bit more.
Jubilaki Are you referring to the menu text, the body text or both? The main font colour on the site is #333 so I can't go too much darker but I'll give #000 a try, see how it looks.
OWM When you say make the text more readable are you referring to font face, colour or size or a combination of those.

I like. I like the menu's. Is that a regular dhtml effect? I wouldn't mind using it on my updated design coming this fall. |

I always believed in "simple is more" and your new template looks way too busy in my opinion.
I would like to see the code for the navigation though. |

wii, I have a similar navigation effect on my site (www.mortioli.co.uk), and this is where I got the coding from: http://www.dynamicdrive.com/dynamicindex1/csshighlight.htm
Not sure if it's the same as MeTV's or not.
Just noticed your edit about the user menu...how did you achieve that? Pretty smart |

Thanks again, all.
The navigation uses no DHTML/Javascript trickery, just straight forward CSS; have a squint at my screen.css stylesheet to see how it's acheived.
Wii, when you say it's too busy, are you referring to the actual layout itself or the amount of information presented to the user in the menus?
OWM, looking over your post again, wuold I be correct in assuming part of your issue with legibility is that everything is in lowercase?
Oli, first of all: Wow, love the redesign Think my orange icons may be better suited to your colour scheme, though. Although I found DynamicDrive to be an invaluable resource when teaching myself JavaScript I feel they've become very dated in the past year or two as evidenced by that script you linked, using DHTML to achieve an effect in IE only that can be achieved in all browser using CSS.
And as for the menu switching, it's just a quick bit of javascript which toggles the visibility property of each menu. It's only in there, though, so people can see what each looks like, it won't make it to the final version.

No, the lowercase isn't an issue IMO.
The main problem is the amount of text in combination with a small font as well as not enough contrast between the font color and the rest of the page's colors. I have thought about it and one of the possible solution would be changing the page's background color. It would highlight the content background and therefore make the content more readable.
Also, if you look at the second text block in "how metv works" it would definately increase its readability if you include some breaks (the about metv is a lot better).
One other problem is possibly that the content's font color is very similar to the sibar's (especially background) colors, so it doesn't stand out as much as it should
The navigation/sidebars look a bit "boring" (darker grey on lighter grey), changing the background color of the headers ("metv menu", "extras menu") would probably be a good idea to give it more "pep" (maybe the content's background color?).
Hope that helped |

What you should try is add a hint of blue to the header GIFs. Even if it's not clearly blue, it's a world of difference when there's a little color in the pages. I've played around with a screenshot of that page, added a faint blue to the title's background image, and although it still looks too grey, I like it a lot better. You're right, Roland, that does look better; gradient's bit extreme but I see what you're getting at. Something else for me to take into consideration over the weekend

Actually both, maybe a little color also. I like monocrome designs, but with an added color touch, if you know what I mean.
