I have a PC with 4.1 Surround Sound (Front Left/Right, Rear Left/Right and a Sub). Some DVD's I have support 5.1 surround sound or Dolby Digital Stereo. If I select 5.1, I can't hear anything. If I select Stereo I get sound only fron the front speakers and the Sub. Is there a way to get 4.1 surround sound from a 5.1 surround sound DVD? It seems like the newer DVD's support both 4.1 and 5.1. IS there a plugin for Windows Media Player, Real Player or another player that will achieve this?
5.1 channel audio will usually be a digitally-encoded format which requires a digital SP-DIF connection to a set of speakers which has a decoder built-in.
A DVD will usually have a selectable 5.1 channel encoded soundtrack and an ehanced stereo soundtrack like Dolby Surround.
To get genuine (not recreated) 4.1 channel sound, you'll need two analogue connections to your speakers, front L/R and rear L/R.
