Does anybody know a good (cheap) place to buy a memory stick (aka pendrive) ? one of those solid state media things you plug in a usb port.
Dixons do a 128MB disgo model for £50. Seem expensive - but suprisingly, this is cheaper than advertised at dabs.com
Thanks...

(EDIT: In the UK )

Thanks Hamlin. Plenty to choose from there, and very good value too. Might even go for a 256MB one instead !

Chumbawumba, just a thought ; why not use a 2,5 harddisk instead of a flashdrive ?
Here's how my 60 Gb portable drive fell on my doorstep for little over 140 euro's! If you use a smaller harddisk, let's say 20 Gb, you'll be ready to go for less than 100 euro's!

I use to think the same thing when I had my first PC, an IBM PS/20.
"What on earth am I going to use this huge 20MB hard drive for?"

Okay, to clarify, it's not my product, it's just something I'm using.
And what I store on this device .... well... everything
I've got almost nothing stored on the local harddisk of my homepc, and I have nothing stored on the local harddisk of my pc at work.
However, both at home and at work I've got all my data available!
Next to that I've stored about 20 ISO files on it (from CD's), so I won't have to carry those CD's with me all the time. Simply mount them with for instance Daemon Tools and you're ready to go.
It works perfectly, at least for me, and it's way less expensive per gigabyte.

I have a 30 GB mp3 player that I store stuff on. Like Marcel, I store a bunch of ISO files on it. Also, I store a backup of my home computer and my work computer. Most importantly, I have a backup of all the pictures from my digital camera. I wouldn't ever want to lose pictures of my children. Oh yeah, and about 2000 mp3 files. I usually keep it in my car so I wouldn't lose this stuff if my house burned down.

lol I get the message: What do you store on it ? - everything !

I just need something robust that i can shift work-in-progress type files around with - from work-to-home-to-work. And take the odd dozen or so piccys down to the kodak shop once in a while. I was also thinking of using it as a dongle to secure my laptop.

@Bookie: there is probably a greater risk of your car being stolen than your house burning down ! But i get your point ...

I don't think there are too many people in the market for stealing a '94 Toyota Corolla with 190K miles. I'd be screwed if someone stole my car AND my house burned down. Fortunately, my garage is on the back part of my lot and not attached to the house. The main thing is that I have duplicates of the important stuff in two locations.

Edit: I use a 128MB USB thumb drive for transferring files from work to home. I'm the web site developer at a college so I keep an up-to-date version of the site on my thumb drive so I can work on it from home or at a coffee shop if I want.

Out of curiosity...
How reliable is the data on these USB "Pen" Drives? Does data mysteriously disappear from these "drives?"

I am thinking of working solely off of this "drive" for my sites, since I am sure we all can relate to the accidental uploading of an older copy from a different machine.

Thanks,
CarKnee

I haven't had any problem losing data but the thing is so small I could potentially lose the whole thing. I know of friends who have lost their thumb drives in the past but I've been very careful in keeping tabs on where I put mine. I don't have mine attached to anything like my keychain so I just put it in my pocket.

If I worked solely off my thumb drive, I would probably make a backup of it regularly to one of my other machines in case I lost it.

I've never lost any data on any of mine. I currently have 4 of them, 2 I don't use anymore, and 2 that I use everyday.

speaking of small, have you seen these:

they are getting smaller and smaller...

Wow! that is small!

This 64MB one I picked up yesterday is great! For $10 I figured it would be worth it, and I thought I wouldnt be using it... boy was I wrong! I want the 512 MB now so I can forget about keeping 2 copies of my sites on different computers!
