OK, now, i've been a long time snitz user, originally started using the good old Snitz 3.1, then, for some strange reason, i'd thought i'd be lazy and use some of these modded forums such as Crash and ServerHacker, now, don't get me wrong, i was using them for years, and they are excellent modded forums, however, i did feel that all of these type of modded forums had one major drawback, none of them could be converted to SQL easily, or even at all in some cases.
Now, part of the reason for using these modded forums was that, yes i was very lazy :), but the biggest problem is that i didn't feel confident enough with asp to stroll through each of the files to install the mods myself, well, over the past year, i have grown very accustomed to ASP, with creating some pretty nice user databases, and front ends.
So........ What i'm planning to do now, which will ultimatley help me out, and if you guys would like the final product i have no problem with that, is i will be creating a Vanilla Snitz forum based on an SQL 2000 database, installing all the required mods and add-ons etc etc etc. When i have finished, i will be generating the SQL script and include this with all the files that have been added/edited for each mod, my goal here is to give those who need it a fully modded snitz forum, but used solely for SQL, and in which you will be able to download a copy of the modded SQL forum, run a small file called setup_sql.asp in which will generate all your tables for you, and have you up and running, with all the mods, and the SQL tables generated in a matter of minutes. Well thats the plan anyway.
Oh yeah, i have one major appology to make,
Snitz, we have been friends for many years, please accept my appologies for wondering off the chosen path to seek out other more easier roads, and i hope you take me back :) rofl. |

What do you mean by convert them to SQL, Snitz works on Access, MySql and SQL Server? Do you mean creating stored procedures for SQL Server? |

David, yes, a vanilla installation of Snitz will work with all of the Databases, but the problem i've just had is that i have been using a modded forum such as ServerHacker (shnforum) for over a year now running on access, in fact nearlly all the pre-modded forums available are all based around access. Recently i had a major problem, in that i wanted to upgrade to SQL, not matter what i did, i just could not upgrade the **** MDB.
So, i was thinking, how many people out there would like to have a pre-modded forum running purely on SQL which has all the mods already installed for them?
I know i'm one of those people.
So i thought i would offer my help in creating one of these for the community. |

That is not correct, Crashes forum which was based on my premodded code definately worked on SQL and was in no way based around access. |

Actually Huw, the Crash version both 3.3.x and 3.4.x did have some problems with SQL Server. I personally helped the 3.3.x versions migrate to SQL with the help of some other Crash forum members and the script for 3.4 was developed by some other forum members.
AFAIK, the problem was the mods that were included in additon to the ones included in your own modded version. Many of those were meant for Access only and the SQL differences between Access and SQL Server all too often appeared, and that has made the path from Access to SQL Server a difficult one, for most cases. I've helped some Crash members upgrading from Access to SQL and the process is more complex than what one would like... |

Well, this should be addressed by the MOD Authors themselves who should be ensuring they work for all databases. |

I completely agree, but that is more the exception than the rule, I would say. |

Guys, my appologies here for causing some tense in these replies, this, was not my intention.
Basically, my whole thinking of this was that recenly, i moved hosts to catalyst2.com, which i must say has the best control applet interface i've seen, and so far working superbly, anyway, i was running a premodded forum, i won't mention the exact name here for obvious reasons, but suffice to say, it was up to a point a very stable and very good pre-modded forum, but the new hosts gave me access to a MSSQL2000 database, which, i couldn't resist on using, and since my current mdb file is reaching 40mb, with 400+ users, and 12000 posts in the archive alone, i felt it neccesary to upgrade to SQL, for obvious reasons. However, this is where my problems started, i did everything i could think of to upgrade the access database, including transformation within the DTS package, creating the querys myself, enabling identity inserts, upsizing the access database (which i would really not recommend) attempting a straight import of the database and then attempting to edit the current table structures, everything i was doing was just not working. So, i am currently left with 2 options, either 1, continue with my access Database and the current pre-modded forum, or simply create a vanilla instance of Snitz, and install all the mods seperatley and test each of them for SQL compatability. Unfortunatley, the latter means that ultimatley, my users would also have to start afresh (which is good because in my opinion the database is getting a little too large for my liking anyway :))
Anyway, now you can all see the reason why i'm doing what i'm doing, and rather than me just sit back and get on with it, i'd thought i'd share my simple modded forum with the community, there may be people who don't need a SQL modded forum, but maybe there are people who can't find the time to create a forum using the SQL connection, so i'm giving them an option.
Don't get me wrong, there won't be anything as snazzy as some of these pre-modded forums such as ServerHacker or Crash, because, honestly, i have absolutly NO design skills whatsoever, so all i'm giving is a simple pre-modded forum based upon SQL. |
