Check out my forums targeted to math students. I setup the forums to allow students to ask homework questions and get help from teachers.

http://www.mathtv.com/forums/

Notes:
Snitz version 3.4.04 with Site Integration and SmileManager Plus mods installed.

I replaced the usual smilies icons with images of math symbols and characters that are too hard to type or can't be done at all. So instead of typing something like x^2 (for x squared), users can insert a math symbol image. I'm not a programmer, so this was the easiest solution I could think of.

Let me know what you think, I'm open to any feedback, good or bad. If anyone wants to take a closer look, let me know and I can set up a test account.

That looks excellent. Very tasteful colour scheme and great icons. Good thinking about using mathematical symbols instead of smilies.

My only comment (based on personal preference), is to enable topic navigation (same as here at snitz). You can set this in the Admin options. Of course, you may have explicitly chosen not to have this.

Really good forum, I like it.

The icons are nice, and they match the colour scheme, which is quite easy to read.

Something you could improve, in my opinion, is that your portal's header, added to the forum navigation menus + login/logout boxes take half the size of the screen vertically when you load the page. Maybe you should try to add the forum menu and login boxes in a smaller navigation bar, so that there is more space for forums.

For instance, as you already have a "user login" option at the top, have you thought of integrating site login and forum login, so that you could take off the default Snitz login section?

Best Regards

Good point. Yeah, I want to try getting the "Save Password" and Forgot your Password?" options in the same row as the login boxes. Maybe that would help bring the forums up on the page a little.

Yes, I have thought about integrating the two logins, but that's a bit over my head right now. The user login at the very top is for paid subscribers to the site and I want to keep the forums free. Eventually I would like to have one login and just have permissions or something set depending on what type of user they are - free or paid.
