On the forum.asp pages that list the topics, why not add a title+ tag to the link and let the ASP have the initial post. Then the ASP could truncate the text at say 250 characters. Using IE, a person could see the jist of the posts just by mousing over them.
If memory serves correct, there was a mod along these lines knocking around back in the 3.3 days; try a search on the mod forums (proabably archived by now), see if that pulls up anything.
