When I showed my site in the "Show off your forum" section one critic wrote:

The roll-over on "The Battle Group" tank would be really cool if it had a sound affect to like an explosion when the flame came out.
Thanks for a nice site. . .
I wanted to do that for a long time, but found no way to get the timing right. On another page of my site (the "Challenge Ladder") I do have picture and sound coordinated, but only by clicking on the "fire" button.

Does anyone know a solution to this design challenge?

Using Shockwave/Flash would be the simplest solution. Theres some good editors out there like SWiSH that you could download the trial version of and probably knock something up

I have tried to do it with MM Flash - isn't Swish just a Flash clone? The "something" that I produced with it didn't do what I wanted. For one thing, it slows loading times significantly, and requires the download of an applet if you don't have Flash.

SWiSH is Flash for those who don't want to spend all the money on Macromedia Flash, don't need all the advanced features, but still want to create nice SWF files.

Quite. Neither solved my problem, for the afore-mentioned reasons.
The current graphic is a simple animated gif with a replace on mouse-over back ground.
