I'll probably use Win98 until my laptop dies because the DVD decoder software that came with it won't work with any other OS. Unfortunately, it's the only decoder that works with the DVD drive in my laptop. Recently, I partitioned the hard drive so I can boot up to 98 when I want to watch DVDs and 2k for everything else.
That is just like Microsoft to do this. A big corporation like that who could afford to buy the world over about 3 times. I believe that if you sell something and unless you go out of business, you should continue to offer support for your product. It will keep the people interested. And most people (computer illiterate) are willing to PAY for support. I would say if they seriously need to stop support (because it would cause them to go bankrupt or something like that) then offer support for 10 years and give the people a chance to upgrage.
hmmm... would you expect sega to still support the megadrive/genesis or nintendo the SNES. Fact is most people who use 98 already know how it all goes and can usually find a solution for them selves its a 6 year old system!

The analogy is not very useful since my Megadrive, which still works perfectly (albeit the controller buttons have almost had it), has never required any bug files or security patches - it was complete to start with.
