I've been reading a lot of the posts by other users and there seems to be a lot of beating around the rosemary bush here.

I see a lot of newbies like, well, me trying to get e-mail verification up and running off of a free server.

There are a lot of smug responses to these questions that seem to assume the answer is obvious, but a lot of the free servers don't seem to make crystal clear whether no e-mail components could be used, or just some, etc.

I would love to see information posted clarifying this issue and answering the following questions:

1. Is there any free server that is known to allow e-mail verification? (and is there anyone that has gotten it to work successfully?

2. CDONTS seems to use the host itself to send mail, all the others seem to use a mail server provided by the forum administrator. Does that mean that on all of the free servers that don't allow use of CDONTS - if I see the other components in the admin dropdown list I can use them, provided I configure my e-mail server access correctly?

I hope someone will please provide more info on this subject so that newbie forum admins like myself can finally determine if it's the wrong server we are using, or if we are configuring something wrong.

There is no beating around the bush as you put it, mail is not the responsibility of the forum, we have coded in as much support as we can, but the rest is up to you/your host and your mail account, there are hundreds and thousands of different combinations, do you expect us to know them all ?

1)Unlikely, most mail server are set up so that they can not be used for spamming or relaying which is why they will not work for the forum, because the forum is not considered to be a local user for the mail server.

2) The problem with CDONTS is that it will ALLWAYS appear in the list even if it is not set up correctly, so may not work anyway, if any other 'ASP' components show up in the list then they are installed on the server and can be used.

This still may not allow you to send email, as you may still have relaying problems, unless the component you choose supports SMTP authentication

I can't agree about this here rosemary bush. It looks like it's taken a beating. From reading a few of the questions and responses, I got a definite feeling that I was being told that it is unheard of to be able to e-mail from a free server.

The big, BIG problem here is that the following is not clear to those, (who like myself) that were previously unaware of the following, startling fact:

CDONTS is very different than the other e-mail components. AHA!

(The older members may feel free to groan at this obvious fact now suddenly comprehended by the newbie buffoon.)

CDONTS requires the ASP server to use it's own e-mail services to send the message, something no free provider in their right mind would want to do.

However, I, like many others, have an ISP that has given me, among many other services, an e-mail address and a server from which to send mail. I've eight of them, in fact, most of which I relatively use for nothing and would love to enslave to my forum.

Every topic I read that started with the question, "Can I send e-mail from a free server", seemed to end with a moderator answering, in one form or another, "They won't let you use CDONTS."

"What we have here is a failure to communicate"

I, Glenn Dewar, your intrepid, newbie buffoon, shall embark on a spiritual journey dedicated to enlighten all to the free use of an ASP server for the purpose of hosting my dopy little forum.

Here is the first step in my journey. Thanks to the following topic:
http://forum.snitz.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=46503

I have discovered it is possible to send an e-mail from a free ASP page!!!! (Thanks to micheal24 from Egypt for his most ecellent post)

Now, if the moderators can tolerate a little criticism without taking me into the woodshed for a beating , note here the phrase:
"I don't think you can use email with brinkster's free account."

The first time I read this I thought it meant that there was no known way for a free ASP page to send e-mail - at all.

What should have been said is "I don't think Brinkster's free account will allow you to send e-mail from their servers with CDONTS. However, you can probably use another component, like CDOSYS, if your ISP will allow you to relay a message sent by Brinkster's server."

To an expert, it may look like I just said the same thing... But clarity is an important issue when dealing with those of us that lack experience.

Now, part two of my journey. ¿How do I get find out if I can calibrate my forum in such a way that my ISP will allow me to relay, so that I don't have to use mac-net?

(BTW, I sent an e-mail to myself using the example page. Mac-Net is lightening fast. I simply would prefer to use one of my own accounts since I am paying for the darned things and I have a greater right to expect stablitiy for something I'm paying for.)

At the end of this, I hope to write up a walkthrough for how to set up an example forum on a free server, using subscriptions and confirmation - with a free ASP host (Brinkster) and a free E-mail server (MacNet) as examples with info on how I got my own ISP's email server to work, God willing that I am so lucky, all while coming up with the most inane usage of smilies known to humanity.

If there is -anyone- out there that has gotten Earthlink to relay using CDOSYS, please don't be shy. I need all the help I can get.

maybe if you just got to the point some other newbie might be able to understand your wafflings as well.

As has been stated on mamy many occasions, the problem is not with your asp pages but with the mail servers and the way they are set up. it is also not a problem with Snitz, Snitz gives you as many ways of connecting to your mail sever as we possibly can, it is not our fault or problem if people choose to use hosting that does not allow for sending emails.

HuwR,

Ack, beatings!

Honestly, no blame assigned - let's face it, we're not paying for this stuff. You guys are saints to help us out.

I'm still neck deep in my adventures and I've been really busy lately, but I promise, within the month to write a walkthrough on this.

I guess I figure my contribution will be making sure it's really easy for people to understand the e-mail thing better.

gDewar, I wish you godspeed in your journey. May your quest be short and fruitful for I am embarking on the same perilous journey to find the free server which we can use for our "little" forums as well.:0

Good Luck

so does that mean if the server you are hosted on does not have any form of email support you can specify an alternate remote server which does?

Eek! Sorry - I meant to get this done a while ago - at the moment I'm still right in the middle of getting my forum up and running... There are still a few modifications I need to make to the code.

As soon as it's up I'll write the walkthrough.

Sorry it wasn't sooner.

Two things I should mention here...

1) MacNet was a dead end - the real issue is using Authorized SMTP.
2) But there are free e-mail services that let you use SMTPAuth
3) I did find out how to use SMTPAuth with my own, paid e-mail account. (Earthlink)

Time for bed. My code is eating my life. ACK!

Hi,

This message is for folks who use the cdosys along with brinkster hosting.

Inorder for snitz to sent out e-mails for non brinkster recipients you need to alter inc_mail.asp as described below.

pinpoint case "cdosys"

replace the original code with the following one (make backups prior to replacement).

case "cdosys"

Set objNewMail = Server.CreateObject("CDO.message")
objNewMail.Configuration.Fields.Item("http://schemas.microsoft.com/cdo/configuration/sendusing") = 2
objNewMail.Configuration.Fields.Item("http://schemas.microsoft.com/cdo/configuration/smtpserver") = "sendmail.brinkster.com"

objNewMail.Configuration.Fields.Item("http://schemas.microsoft.com/cdo/configuration/sendusername")="valid brinkster email"

objNewMail.Configuration.Fields.Item("http://schemas.microsoft.com/cdo/configuration/sendpassword") ="your corresponding password"

objNewMail.Configuration.Fields.Item("http://schemas.microsoft.com/cdo/configuration/smtpauthenticate") = 1

objNewMail.Configuration.Fields.Item("http://schemas.microsoft.com/cdo/configuration/smtpserverport") = 25

Argh.

Waited for Brinkster to set up educational accounts again, and no luck - CDO is not enabled.

If anyone finds a good free asp host that allows CDO, I'll finish the walkthrough. E-mail me.

So close, but... so far.

Hello. Nice to be back here.

There are free hosts like tripod that allow you to use their CGI to send mail for free, even if your forum isn't hosted on tripod itself. You're limited to something like 100 emails a day, which is enough for email validation. If anyone here wants it, I can probably whip up a quick mod for this purpose.
