Hi Folks,
I've been thinking about using Google AdWords to promote my web site and was wondering what your experiences with it are like.
Since it's more of an experiment than anything, I'm not planning to spend a lot on it. I was thinking just a few cents a day.
As I understand it, I'm only charged if people click my ad. But I figure that dozens of people will be exposed to the ad without clicking which might just be enough exposure to encourage people to visit some other time.
You think that makes sense? Is it worth it? |

That might be something I'd consider if my site actually could make any money. Unfortunately, it's more of a hobby than anything else. I'd just like to attract more visitors.
The thing I like about Adwords is that I can limit how much I spend a day and therefore budget out what I'm willing to spend over the year. There really isn't any seasonality to a site like mine so I don't really have to do promotional pushes at Christmas or anything like that. |

Try it as an experiment. Spend $100 and see if it generates quality traffic. |

That's exactly what I was thinking. |

I use both AdWords and Overture. I get a lot more traffice with AdWords, and more sales as well. It's returning multiple $ for every $1 spent on ads (we sell exercise videos, so the average sale isn't really large). Interestingly, most months, the average sale from an Overture ad is significantly larger than the average sale from an AdWord ad, but we have a lot more exposure and more total sales with AdWords (we've also put more effort into the AdWords key words, too). |

Well, I've signed up for AdWords. So far, a couple hours in and I've got 45 impressions / 0 clicks, so I still don't owe them anything.
I actually don't mind that I'm only getting impressions so far. It's not costing me anything and I like to think of it as building up awareness.
It's also kind of interesting to look at the Google reports and see what keywords are generating impressions. Not what I expected so far.

AdWords is working out well.
I've already blown through over 1000 impressions and hit my purchase limit for they day. When I checked yesterday, my ads were the only one's being shown on my targeted keyword searches. I didn't even have to pay the highest bid price either. Granted it doesn't seem like target keywords are that popular.
Still I'm more than pleased how things are going so far.

Actually, yes. But it depends. If the ads are espcially effective I blow through my alloted budget pretty quickly and don't get that many impressions. I guess it's a double edged sword kind of thing. I get visitors, but less general exposure.
Lately, I'm usually the top ad for my keywords, but people are clicking the ads more and my ads don't run for very long during the day.
I'm planning to put together smaller more tightly focused keyword groups and shift them around so that I'm targeting particular keyword groups more intensely, instead of going for the really broad audience in my current keyword groups.

Yeah you'll have too, in fact if your too broad and your CTR rate isn't high enough you may even get an email from google asking you too refine your keywords a little more. |

If your clickthrough rates drop too low, they will automatically deactivate the keywords with the low rates. |
