I haven't noticed this before but the first topic doesn't have an avatar!

I would recheck the changes you made to the topic.asp file to ensure all of the code that is in the MOD Installation instructions for the avatar mod is there. Its likely that you missed out the code to display the avatar for the topic, but included it for the replies, so the avatars are ommitted from the first topic.

You missed out the last instruction in the readme for the avatar mod installation:

Quote from readme:

Look for this code arond line 796
